Lucene Harold "Sam" Carll, 88, of Springvale, died early Friday, January 07, 2005 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a very brief illness. He was born in Waterboro on July 3, 1916, the son of Elwin and Elinor (Carpenter) Carll.Sam graduated from Waterboro High School and the former Gray's Business College in Portland. He then attended the former New England Institute of Funeral Service in Boston. Following graduation, he served his apprenticeship at Carpenter - Jenks Funeral Home, then located in Providence, RI.He returned to Springvale, and in 1939 he opened the L. H. Carll Funeral Home on Oak Street. In 1945, he built a modern facility on Main Street and opened the new funeral home in November 1946. This new funeral home was considered state-of-the-art, and as such, its floor plan and construction was featured in the American Funeral Director, a national funeral service trade journal. He continued in the profession until 1961 when he sold the funeral home and retired.In his retirement, Sam moved to Square Pond in Shapleigh and converted his camp into a year round residence, where he was known by his CB handle, the "Mayor of Square Pond." He was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and gardener. For many years he spent time at his camp in Rangeley where he often fished and went snowmobiling. For several winters he spent the month of March in Venice, FL where he enjoyed playing golf.In 1997 he sold his place on Square Pond and built a home in Springvale. Since moving back to town, he had been an avid day trader on the internet. He also liked to visit people and places in and around town, driving daily until last Saturday.He was a member and Past Master of Alfred Lodge, AF & AM; member and Past Worthy Patron of Ruth Chapter, OES, Springvale. Sam was also a former member of the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, the Sanford Country Club and the Sanford Town Club.He is survived by his companion of 58 years, Joyce Shaw. At Sam's request, there will be no visiting hours or services and interment will be private in Waterboro in the spring. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
