Keith Warren Clough 1943 - 2024
WATERBORO –Keith Warren Clough, 80, of Waterboro, died peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024 at his home.
He was born in Sanford, September 22, 1943 the son of Stanley and Ruth (Davis) Clough. He grew up in Sanford, the youngest of five children. He attended Pleasant Street Baptist church in his youth. He graduated in the Sanford High School Class of 1963 and began working for American Cyanamid (CY/RO) shortly after and remained there for 43 years, retiring in 2005.
Keith married Sheila O’Neil, July 27, 1968 and, together, they raised their children, Kevin, Cheryl and Joseph.
Mr. Clough was a volunteer firefighter in Springvale, and later in Waterboro, beginning in 1963. He was part of the Fire Brigade at CY/RO from 1963 to 2005, serving as Captain for part of his career. He was also an instructor at training exercises for first responders.
Keith became passionate about golf in his teenage years. He looked back fondly on his time playing at Province Lake Golf Club, with his friend Peter Kostis, and swimming in the lake to find golf balls to use for their round. Later in life, Keith introduced his son Joseph to the game and it quickly became a shared pastime for them; a way to spend time together and talk about life, or to say little and simply enjoy each other’s company.
He was an avid hunter all of his life, often going with his brothers. He also enjoyed playing softball, bowling and ice fishing. When his children were old enough, the family enjoyed camping, hiking, swimming, canoeing, biking and skiing.
In retirement, Keith and Sheila enjoyed biking and skiing into their 70’s.
More than anything else, Keith lived for his children and grandchildren. At any gathering or event, he would be the man holding a baby.
Keith was predeceased by his siblings, Virginia Clough Hetzel, Shirley Clough Brunelle, Everett Clough and Donald Clough. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his children, Kevin Robert Clough and his wife Amy of South Berwick, Cheryl Anne Finn and her husband Gregory of Hollis and Joseph Stanley Clough and his wife Joanna Grubman, and his grandchildren, Lauren Noreen Clough, Lily O’Neil Clough, Brenna Caroline Finn, Julia McKenna Finn and Joseph Rockwell (Rocky) Clough.
A memorial service will be held at the Carll-Heald and Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale on Friday, August 23 at 12 noon. Relatives and Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 until service time. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery.
The summer of ‘65, Wells Beach ME, defined the future for two Howard Johnson’s hostesses from Massachusetts. Each met the man from Maine with whom they would share their lives. Although our guys are both gone now, that summer enabled two college friends to continue to enjoy each other’s company for more than 50 years, watching our kids, and now grandkids, embark on their own adult lives. I will always be thankful that Keith fell in love with Sheila.
