Julia St. Germain

April 30, 1957 ~ August 28, 2016
Scarborough - Julia (Coan) St. Germain, 59, passed away on August 28, 2016, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on April 30, 1957, in New Rochelle, NY. Julia was raised in Beverly, MA, attended Beverly High School, and was awarded her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of New Hampshire. Although born NY and raised in Massachusetts, Maine was her home. She moved to Portland in 1983 and never looked back. Prior to her retirement in July 2015, Julia was a Vice President of Marketing Communications and Operations at UNUM where she was a dedicated and loyal employee for 32 years. Julia was a talented artist and seamstress. She loved her dogs, reading, the beach, the outdoors, skiing, sewing, and knitting. Recently she took up art and became an accomplished painter. She also volunteered teaching English as a second language. Her book club was a small, extremely close group of friends who have shared their love of reading for over 30 years. More than anything, Julia loved spending time with her family and friends. She maintained close friendships with four of her University of New Hampshire friends for 40 years. Those closest to Julie knew her as a private, selfless person with uncommon inner strength. She saw the good in others and endured challenges without a hint of complaint. Never was this more evident than in her battle against cancer. Her courage, resolve and will to live will always serve as an incredible inspiration to those who loved her most. Julia will be greatly missed. She is survived by her parents, John T. and Jane T. I worked with Julia for decades at Unum and always loved running into her somewhere in the building. She would greet me with that big smile, we would laugh about something, catch up on some aspect of our lives and I would go on my way, with a lighter heart. Even before Unum, we were fellow rugby players, sharing the field in a crazy, chaotic game and then sharing a beer afterwards. She has an extraordinary spirit and light, and the world is less for her absence. I am so sorry for your loss – your gal was a gem!

No words can express my sadness over your family’s loss. But I hope that you all find some comfort in knowing the strong legacy that she left with so many colleagues at Unum. We will forever be indebted to her for sharing her knowledge and experience, but mostly her time. And, I will never forget her unmistakable, infectious laugh that could break the silence of cube land and brighten your day. Rest in peace, Julia.

I was very saddened to hear of Julia’s passing. I worked with her in the late 90s and she was my business mentor the last 2 years before she retired. It was a privilege and honor to spend time with her understanding marketing, but also sharing about things that are really important. My condolences to family and friends, for a bright light taken away too soon.

I was so sad to hear about Julia’s passing. It is really so hard to take this in. I worked with her for many years and always had so much respect for her work ethic and kindness to others. It is difficult to believe her bright light will no longer be here on earth but I am a firm believer that she is shining brightly in another peaceful, love filled place. My sincere condolences to all the family.Kind regards and heartfelt sympathies, Suzanne

Though we only knew Julia as Rudy’s mom and someone who so easily chatted with us as we walked our dog Koji in the neighborhood we always thought of her as a friend and someone we wanted to know better. It is because of her little red dog that we got our little red dog. We treasure the memory of our brief times with her and are so sad to let her go. We are sending blessings to her and to all of you who knew and loved her. We just wanted you to know how much we appreciated Julia and will miss her bright light.

Although I only knew Julia through painting, what I read of her many connections and ways of outreach do not surprise me. Julia always brought a beautiful sense of light into the room where we painted. She was doing wonderful work. She never complained – in fact I only learned she was battling cancer a few short months ago. It was a privilege to know her and paint with her. She will be missed greatly. When painting class begins again, I know her memory will accompany us. My deepest condolences go to Julia’s family and all who loved her.

To Julia’s family,I am so sorry to hear of Julia’s passing. What an amazing woman she was! I was a colleague of hers at Unum, and loved connecting with her as well as working with her. She was a dedicated and committed leader, whom I respected and admired – but much more importantly, someone with a great heart who made others feel special. I am so sorry that she was taken away from all of you – way too soon. My deepest condolences, Vicki Gordan
