Joseph R. Stevens, 88, of Sanford, died Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Mr. Stevens was born in Berwick, Maine to Arthur and Maude Goodwin Stevens on May 3, 1917 and attended South Berwick Schools. He worked for 28 years as a machinist on submarines at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He retired from the shipyard in 1972 and went on to work at South Berwick Shoe and the South Berwick dump where he was employed from 1973 to 1989. He married his wife Bernice in 1988.Joseph was an active member of A.A.R.P and attended Curtis Lake Christian Church. He enjoyed playing beano and also went on several trips to Foxwoods. Mr. Stevens liked to read the weekend paper and was a lover of animals, particularly his cat Beauty and his new puppy, Hope. Joseph was a dedicated family man and husband and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Bernice Stevens of Sanford; A son, Robert Stevens of Sanford; four daughters, Myrtle Lemay and Harriet Conway, both of New Hampshire, Jane Johnson of South Lebanon, and Carol Knight. Mr. Stevens is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A period of visitation will be held at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, located at 580 Main Street in Springvale on Thursday, December 15, 2005 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 16, 2005 at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in South Berwick, ME.
