Joseph Mazzitelli, Sr., 82, of North Berwick, died on Friday, May 24, 2013 at York Hospital in York.Joseph was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on August 15, 1930 to Frank and Theresa (Demazza) Mazzitelli. He grew up in Winooski, Vermont where he attended local schools. After his schooling he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While serving in the Army he traveled up and down the West Coast doing inspections of the ASAP early warning missile detection system for General Owens. After completing his enlistment he returned to Vermont where he stayed for several years until relocating to North Berwick where he lived for the rest of his life. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before retiring inn the 1990's.Joseph was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. When he was young he would often fish in the Winooski River in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. He enjoyed going tuna fishing and also on deer and moose hunts with his son. In the 1950's while he was serving in the military he went on a hunting trip with his friend, Colonel Dave Bartt to Kodiak Island in Alaska before it had become a state. While hunting there they harvested the largest Kodiak bear on record to that date. Joseph was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man who loved his children and will be dearly missed.Surviving are five children, Lisa Mazzitelli of Burlington, Vermont, Gina Mazzitelli of Wilcock, Vermont, Mary Beth Mazzitelli of Vermont, Andrew Mazzitelli of North Berwick and Joseph Mazzitelli, Jr. and his wife Kim of Rochester; two granddaughters, Cassandra and Mercedes Mazzitelli; a brother, Jim Mazzitelli of Tampa, Florida and the Sargent family of Vermont.Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, June 1st at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Disabled American Veterans, P.O.
