Falmouth Foreside—John “Jack” P. O’Sullivan, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2026. Born March 15, 1942, in Lewiston, he was the son of the late Margaret (Egan) and John P. O’Sullivan, Sr.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen (Kennedy) O’Sullivan, and his sister, Margo O’Sullivan. He is survived by his children, Brenda and her husband Daniel Kostyk, John III and his wife Nancy O’Sullivan, Kerry and her husband Dave Crichton, and Daniel and his wife Alexandra Proelss; grandchildren: Claire, Catherine, Caitie, Kelly, Sean, Molly, Ryan, Kevin, Brendan, Liam, Charlotte, Jackson, and Bennett; his brothers, Dr. Philip O’Sullivan and his wife, Jane, and Michael O’Sullivan and his wife, Jan; and dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Raised in Lewiston and Falmouth, Jack’s youth was filled with sports, caddying at the Portland Country Club, and early adventures that sparked a lifelong love of golf. He was an avid Boston and local sports fan. He graduated from Cheverus High School and the College of the Holy Cross. He earned an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
While at Holy Cross, he met Kathy Kennedy, a Boston College nursing student from Holyoke, MA. Through letters and visits, a love story was born. They married in 1964, honeymooned on Nantucket, and started a family, first residing in the Boston area and then moving back to Jack’s beloved Maine.
A newly minted CPA, Jack began his career at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. in Boston and Portland, later served as Maine’s Commissioner of Finance & Administration, and spent 15 years as Chief Financial Officer at Bangor Hydro Electric Company. He taught accounting on the side at Husson College and he served on the boards of St. Joseph’s Hospital and SatCon Technology Corporation.
Jack’s greatest joy was family. He and Kathy centered their lives on faith, kindness, and education—cheering from sidelines and bleachers, gathering for home‑cooked meals, and sharing summers by Maine’s lakes and coast. He retired early to care for Kathy during her illness. They were married for 40 years. After her passing he remained the family’s steadfast center, delighting in his 13 grandchildren and many recitals, games, and graduations.
A private family service will be held with burial to follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Biddeford, where Jack will be laid to rest beside Kathy.
Arrangements are under the direction of the new Conroy-Tully Walker, Funeral, Cremation, & Gathering Center, 300 Allen Ave. Portland, ME.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Northern Lights Hospice and Align Home Care.
