JOHN P. ‘JACK’ FLYNN

South Portland – Born on January 27, 1938, in Danvers, Massachusetts, he passed peacefully on October 2, 2026, surrounded by family. In between, he left an indelible mark on his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and the countless people he coached, counseled, and mentored.

He attended Danvers schools, graduating from the former Holten High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He captained or co-captained a number of teams, and was mentored by multi-sport coach George Radulski, who served as an important and lasting influence.

In June 1960, freshly graduated from Bates College as the first college attendee in his family, he married Carol (Heldman). Their sixty-six years together were filled with devotion, adventure, and a deep commitment to family. Their journey included many countries but was always uniquely local.

From 1960 through 1993, he served South Portland High School as a teacher, guidance counselor, football coach, and athletic director. Upon retirement from South Portland, he joined his college teammate Howard Vandersea as an assistant coach at Bowdoin College and later came out of retirement again to coach Scarborough High School to its inaugural state football championship. He never stopped coaching.

He was an accomplished athlete and coach and was inducted into the sports halls of fame at Danvers, MA, high school, along with his sister, Anne, the South Portland Football Hall of Fame, the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, and was recognized by the Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. He was selected to the Sunday Telegram All Maine Team while at Bates. He was awarded Coach of the Year multiple times. His teams won, but greater satisfaction came from the enduring connection he had with former players and counselees during their ensuing lives. He remained in regular contact with so many of them.

Jack’s faith was his compass. As a devoted parishioner of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, he lived his values with humility, kindness, and steadfast purpose.

Notwithstanding his many individual accolades, he would say his greatest accomplishments were his children and especially his grandchildren, Jennifer, Kiely, Christopher (Ellery), Tyler, Andrew, Elizabeth, Josiah, and Mary. He took great pride and satisfaction from each of their accomplishments but was never surprised by any of them. The arrival of great grandchild George on New Year’s Day in 2025 brought him immeasurable joy. Jack and Carol made it a point of emphasis to be present for every baptism, confirmation, graduation, and most concerts, recitals, and athletic events of their grandchildren, regardless of where they were occurring. Jack and Carol loved skiing with them at Mt. Abram in winters and spending summers with them at Higgins Beach.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, John and Rose, his sister Patricia, his in-laws Lloyd and Blanche Heldman, John and Patricia Monahan, Bob Nowak, Stanley Michalski, Carol Heldman, Lloyd “Mike” Heldman, and Lorrain Heldman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, their four children and their spouses, Deborah Racine (Kevin), Catherine Solario, Brian (Gervaise) and John, his grandchildren, great-grandchild, his beloved sister, Anne Michalski, brother-in-law Dan Heldman, cousin and “little brother” Len Johnson (Janice), and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, friends, former players, and counselees. who have been grateful for his influence. A better friend couldn’t be found. He will be missed greatly, but his example will not be forgotten.

Although there were too many friendships to mention all, those that spanned fifty (50) years or more included their Bates College fellow alumni, Will and Bev Callendar, El and Eileen Guthrie, Joe and Anne Murphy, Pete and Maryellen Gartner, and Jim and Audrey Flanagan, as well as Lee and Pat Akerley, Tige and Sandy Curran, Connie and Louise Nisbet, John and Jean Sullivan, Bill and Beverly Cunnane, and Jay and Martha Vance.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care teams who supported Jack in recent months, and to the Gosnell House.

Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, October 15 from 4-7PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 16 at 11AM at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. 1. I first met Jack in 1972 , that summer he was a fiery right fielder and slugger on a local softball team. Jack, Tige Curran, Connie Nesbit, Paul Brogan, and Lee Akerley were a few of the S.P. teachers and coaches who were on that team. Jack and the others showed us youngsters, John, Brian, and me, how to compete with honor. God speed to my old friend and mentor. Warmest condolences to Carol and the Flynn clan from the Federico family.

    • Jack became my hero when I was just a little girl and he was falling in love with my beautiful cousin Carol. He would place me high up on his broad shoulders and carry me from pine point to old orchard beach with his sweet heart by his side! I used to feel so special with both of them. Their love was palpable and I loved being around them . I used to think that maybe some day I’d have a husband like Jack.. So kind and strong yet gentle. I never had what they had in marriage but I knew what love should be…. I can’t imagine how my cousin Carol will get through but she’s strong and somehow Jack will carry her because that’s the kind of man he was,… one of a kind salt of the earth and even though I didn’t see him in the end I sure hope he knew what effect he had on me 💕love to you all and you, Jack rest now 🙏Janie Gagnier

  2. Carol and family, I was devastated to hear that Jack had passed away last Friday. I just learned of this today and was so saddened to hear the news as you know Jack was one of my favorite coaches and I always considered him a close friend as well as your family. I had both of your children in school and love them and Carol you are always such a sweetheart, and always went out of your way to be nice to me. Jack was a special person to me and many friends of mine, especially those who played football under his leadership. He was a great coach, a great friend and guidance counselor.
I hope that in the coming days ahead, you’ll be able to find the positive and lasting memories of your wonderful husband and father. My deepest condolences and love to you all. Love, Michael Dumas.

  7. Carol and family,
I was sadden to learn of Jack’s passing.
He was a great guy and it was an honor to bring him the Eucharist. His faith was very important to him, and I was glad to help him.
Being an educator myself, we had much in common. He will be missed.
With my deepest sympathy and prayers.

  8. So very sorry to just learn of Jack’s passing. When Sally and I first moved to Mitchell Road in South Portland in 1995 one of the first to extend a neighborly handshake was Jack! Ever since that day I have enjoyed our “driveway social hour” where we would catch up on news of the day, family, town matters and sports as we took a break from shoveling snow or raking leaves. I could not have asked for a better neighbor and man of wisdom to live across the street from me. I will cherish those precious memories of time spent with Jack, he will be greatly missed. My condolences to you, Carol, and your family, at this sad time.

  9. Carol and Flynn family, I was so saddened to hear about Jack’s passing. Jack was a great man, father, coach, and friend to so many. I loved working with him, listening to his fantastic stories, and thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.

  10. Jack became my hero when I was 5 years old and he was falling in love with my beautiful cousin Carol . He would place me high up on his broad shoulders and with his sweetheart by his side would walk from pine point to old orchard beach. Their love was palpable and I was in heaven when I was around them. I used to think maybe I could have a husband like Jack. So kind and gentle yet strong and capable. I never had this in a marriage yet I knew what a marriage could be as I watched their family grow and how much they were dedicated to one another. So even though I didn’t see him at the end of his life, I. hope he knew what he meant to me. And now my cousin Carol will have to go on ….. I’m quite sure he will help carry her through this difficult time as he always did. Jack please now rest and Carol and family know how much you are loved💕

  11. Dear Carol and the Flynn family,
I’m deeply sorry for your loss.
When I think of Coach Flynn, I remember his gracious spirit and his gift for bringing out the best in me. His friendship and love always made me feel truly seen.
The Irish poet John O’Donohue wrote a blessing titled “For a Leader”:
“And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak to mind your life.”

  17. Dear Flynn Family,
Our family is thinking of you with love as you mourn Jack. Reading about his life, we were especially touched by the way he showed up for his family and continued to care for the people he guided long after their time together. He gave people reasons to believe in themselves and made sure his grandchildren knew how deeply he believed in them.

We know that no tribute, however heartfelt, can take the place of having him beside you. We hope you find comfort in the memories you share and in seeing his kindness and devotion reflected in the family he loved so much.

Please know that we hold you close in our thoughts, now and in the quieter days ahead.

    With love and heartfelt sympathy,

  23. Jim Wylie

I’m heart broken learning of the loss of Jack. Many fond memories on and off the football field at Bates College. A terrific guy who always gave his heart to his team and friends. What a remarkable life he and Carol shared so full of friends, family and students and athletes he guided. Jack made his mark and will long be remembered.

God bless you Jack and provide your family with inner strength to manage their loss. Jim and Karen

  24. The true measure of a coach is having a concern and genuine interest in those he or she coaches ,in their lives outside the lines. Jack always asked for my family by name whenever I saw him. I believe he did that with everyone who ran into. A blessing and great example to many. Thank you, sir. Praying for the comfort of the Flynn family.
