John HowgateSpringvale, MaineJohn Howgate, 87, of Springvale, Maine, died January 6, 2002 at The Goodall Hospital, Sanford.Born on September 20, 1914 in Sanford Maine, he was the son of Harry and Louisa Gummersal Howgate and was a 1931 Graduate of Sanford High School.Mr. Howgate was a Unites States Navy Veteran serving during WWII. During his time in the Navy he was on The USS Long Island which was a carrier, THE USS Texas which was a battleship and The USS Dickerson which was a destroyer.He worked for the Goodall Sanford Mills until their closing then moving to Plaistow, NH., where he worked for Kezar Manufacturing for one year. He then moved back to Sanford and was employed by Alloy Products where he worked for 6 years. Mr. Howgate then worked for and retired from Sanders Associates in Nashua, NH. where he worked for 14 years. Mr. Howgate was a longtime member of the Sanford Country Club, a member and past Master of the Springvale Masonic Lodge #190 AF&AM, a member of The Springvale First Baptist Church and the Mousam Lake Grange, Shapleigh, Maine.He was a member of the YMCA of Sanford where he was an avid swimmer up until a few years ago. He enjoyed gardening winning awards through the Mousam Lake Grange displays at The Acton Fair. While his sons were playing baseball in the late 50's, he coached Little League in Sanford.Mr. Howgate is survived by his wife Muriel Grant Howgate of Springvale; his sons Nate Howgate and his wife Jane of Shapleigh, ME., Barry Howgate and his wife Judy of North Yarmouth, ME; his sister Gladys Stilphen of Sanford, ME; and his 4 grandsons and 2 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.Relatives and friends may call from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Thursday at Heald Funeral Home 580 Main Street, Springvale, ME., where a Masonic service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday followed by a funeral service officiated by Rev. Kenneth Keating of The First Baptist Church of Springvale.
