December 23, 1939 ~ July 29, 2026

Born in: Portland, Maine
Resided in: Scarborough, Maine

Scarborough – John F. Fallona, 86, passed away at Piper Shores on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 after battling Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease for 8 years. He was the loving husband of Linda (Briggs) Fallona with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.

John was born in Portland, Maine on December 23, 1939 to parents of Irish Heritage, the late Edward and Anna (King) Fallona. He was a graduate of Cony High School Class of 1958 where he played basketball and baseball. He attended Fryeburg Academy after high school, then SMVTI (SMCC) where he studied Industrial Electricity. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in business at the University of Maine.

He spent his high school years working after school and weekends at Damon’s Sandwich Shop in Augusta. When asked later in life how he became so successful in business, John said “the main ingredients are hard work, dedication and having a good work ethic… really all the things I learned at Damon’s Sandwich Shop.”

John began working at Central Maine Power Company as a dispatcher in 1964 and advanced to Vice President of Operations. He felt his greatest accomplishment in his career at CMP was managing the Ice Storm of 1998; the biggest ice storm Maine had seen in 100 years. He retired in 2004 after 40 years of service, then became owner and president of On Target Utility Services, which provided underground locating, pole setting, storm restoration and other utility services for electric utilities in Maine and New England. He started the company with only 30 employees and it grew to approximately 300 employees by the time he sold it in 2018. He was 79 years old at the time of the sale.

He believed there was a philanthropic responsibility that went along with being an entrepreneur; and gave generously to many community charities. One contribution very dear to his heart was the Capital Area Recreation Association (C.A.R.A.). John spent many hours mowing lawns, working at concession stands and providing financial support to this organization. John enjoyed all sports but it would be an understatement to say he ‘loved’ baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox! In the late 1960’s, he provided weekly sports commentary for a local radio show.

John was named Business Person of the year in 2004 by the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce for his business acumen and community service. He was also the recipient of the Peter G. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 for community impact through service and business. In 2021 he received an honorary doctorate degree from Thomas College for his philanthropy.

In addition to his wife Linda, John is survived by his children. Michael Fallona (Kimberly), Catherine Fallona (Peter DeWitt) and Karen Barry (David): his step-daughter, Jill Macomber (Jacob Foreman); his grandchildren, Anna Barry, Kaitlin Barry, Mary DeWitt, Will Fallona, Caroline Fallona and Matthew Fallona; his step-grandchildren, Madeline DeWitt, Grace DeWitt and Grady Foreman; his sister, Jane Fallona-Sheehan (Terry); and his friend and former wife, Lorraine Fallona.

In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his infant son Mark Fallona.

John will always be remembered as a kind, generous, and humble man. When he was interviewed and asked, what are some things others might not know about you, he said “behind every successful man is a great wife. I am a man of few words. I love baseball at all levels – my team is the Red Sox. I am very proud of my kids and grandkids.”

His motto in life was “mind over matter” and his favorite saying was “the day you become satisfied with what you’ve built, is the day it starts going downhill.”

The Fallona family wishes to thank the staff at Piper Shores and the ‘sparkle girls’ for the excellent care he received. He was affectionately known by the staff as “the comeback kid.”

His loss will be felt by many hearts. One life lived, many lives touched!

A Celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.

  6. Linda and the entire Fallona family I am very sorry for your loss. John was an excellent businessman with a huge heart. John was my mentor at CMP and I am forever grateful for everything he taught me and the opportunities that he gave me. I am thankful for the many years that I had the privilege to work with John. He was a dedicated hard worker and gave his all to any mission that he undertook. John loved his family and generously supported the community. He will be greatly missed.

  7. John will be missed! I’ll never forget John from the CMP days! We were working one of the major ice storms. We were going on our 19th day without power. I was a customer rep at the time at CMP. He’d come check on us everyday to see how we were all doing. Most everyone around me had power restored. I was sitting taking calls, my hair up in a ball cap. He asked me what’s with the ball cap. I said I still don’t have power. He said well we can’t have that. He said “well where do you live?” I told him and he abruptly walked off. I said to myself what did I do/say wrong. That night going home at 1 am, there were crews in my area, and my power was restored. Did he have something to do with it? I’d like to say he did. He thought so much of his workers. He was truly a great man. He always knew their names and always spoke to you when he passed you in the hall and used your name. He was always a great force in the CMP world. Truly a terrific man.
