John C. Canastra, Jr. 80, a resident of Sanford for the past 13 years, and longtime resident of New Bedford, MA died October 24, 2004 at Goodall Hospital. He was born June 24, 1924 in Acushnet, MA a son of John and Herminia (Cabral) Canastra, Sr. and graduated from New Bedford High School. He entered the U.S. Navy and served with the rank of Seaman, First Class during World War II. Mr. Canastra worked primarily in the electronics field and held the position of supervisor before his retirement. He enjoyed taking day trips, baseball and rooting for the Red Sox. He was very capable around the house. He liked to cook, sew, fixing things and working with his hands and using hand tools. He was always considered the Patriarch of the family. A real giver, he showed his concern by his actions, not mere words. He was devoted to his wife and family. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Irene (Perry) Canastra of Sanford; two daughters, Janet Jakan of Sanford and Alice Canastra and her 4 children of Plattsburg, NY; one son, Joseph Canastra and his 3 children of New Bedford, MA; by his special grandson, Joshua Jakan of Sanford, whom he cared for as a youngster. Also, one brother and five sisters. His daughter, Judith E. Bastion and one brother and one sister predeceased him.Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 30, 2004 at 3 pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Family and friends may call from 1 pm until the time of the service. Burial will be private at Oakdale Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the Maine Prevention of Blindness, P.O.
