South Portland - Joel Kelley, a cherished husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away unexpectedly at Maine Medical Center on October 4, 2024. Joel lived a life centered on family, community. Joel was born in Portland, Maine, in 1950 at Maine General Hospital. He was one of eight siblings. Joel met the love of his life, Linda, in the late 1960s while they were both involved in a local Portland drum corps. They were married 53 years in July and built a beautiful life together, raising their daughter, Laura, in South Portland. Joel worked for South Portland School Department for many years, becoming a familiar face in the community. He enjoyed snowmobiling, bowling, and playing darts, excelling in all three. His quick wit, humor, and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Joel was the kind of man who would do anything for anyone, always eager to lend a helping hand. Family was at the heart of everything for Joel, especially his grandchildren, Shaylee and Chase. Known lovingly as "Papa," he delighted in every moment with them. Whether camping, visiting the Fryeburg Fair, picking apples, strawberry picking, or baking apple pies, Joel made sure their time together was filled with joy and adventure. He cherished their laughter, and he believed that any time spent with them was time well spent. He was a proud grandfather who was fortunate to see them nearly every day. Some other special times were family game nights, going to the movies, our talks about life, all the holidays, especially Christmas. From all the silly times to the serious moments, Papa was always there. We are so fortunate that he was able to be a part of seeing Laura graduate from college in May of 2024, Shaylee graduate from high school in June of 2024, and having a great memory of Chases’ 17th birthday the day before he passed away. Joel was also deeply involved in his daughter Laura’s life, from driving her and her friends to events to proudly attending her marching band performances. He drove the equipment truck for the marching band, was a member of the “Pit Crew,” which is a time he enjoyed greatly, and ensuring he was always part of her world. His garage was his personal haven, where he enjoyed working on stained glass projects, sipping coffee, and watching TV. This space was his retreat, and he spent many peaceful hours there, creating beautiful pieces and reflecting on life. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Joel especially treasured his time spent in the County on Eagle Lake. Some of his fondest memories were made there with his nephew, Curt, and his wife, Diane. Whether they were fishing, hunting, or simply sitting by the campfire, Joel relished these moments of quiet, meaningful connection. They were adventures full of laughter and storytelling was a special time for him. He had a connection to nature and was happiest when surrounded by the lights, sounds, and smells of the woods and campfires. Joel was predeceased by his parents, Gertrude and Lester Kelley, and his brothers, Keith, Jimmy, Kenny, and Dale. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Kelley, of South Portland; his devoted daughter, Laura Kelley; his grandchildren, Shaylee and Chase of South Portland; his brothers, Roger Kelley of Saco and Pete Kelley (wife Sue) of Biddeford; and his sisters, Joan Cahill of South Portland and Vivian Napolitano (husband Bill) of Standish. Joel also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. Joel also had a special bond with his dog, Bear, also known as Guinness, that he loved very much. The Kelley family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Loffredo for the care and support he provided Joel and Linda over the years, as he always said “Joel, you are a complicated man!” and he was. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 17 from 11AM-1PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Graveside Service will follow at 1:30PM at Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Avenue, Portland. Donations in Joel’s memory may be made to the South Portland Rescue or the Greater Portland Animal Refuge League. Joel will be remembered for his deep love of family, his family camping trips, and his unwavering kindness. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
