James W. Smith, 78, of Sanford, formerly of Wilmington, MA, passed away on Tuesday May 31, 2005 at H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford. He was born on February 15, 1927, in Saugus, MA, the son of Henery and Catherine (Halpin) Smith. Mr. Smith graduated from Malden Catholic High School where he had played on the football team. He then served in the United States Navy during WWII where he was awarded the Victory Medal.After the war he pursuid a degree in electrical engineeering and graduated from Boston College. For many years he worked for Alpha Industries and Sylvania in Woburn, MA retiring in 1992. On September 15, 1990 he married Marguerite F. Valente at St. Anthony's Catholic church in Woburn, MA and in 1992 they moved to Maine from Wilmington. After retirement he enjoyed reading, walking the dogs. He still had an interest in football and enjoyed wathcing the BC games as well as the New England Patriots. He was also a Red Sox fan.He is predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Diane (LeBlanc) Smith. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Marguerite Valente Smith of Sanford, three sons, James Smith Jr., of Beverly, MA ; Thomas Smith of Winchester, MA ; Paul Smith of Medford, MA ; one daughter, Mary Ann Gallezzo of Wilmington, MA ; 6 grandchildren, Mary Smith, James Smith, Christopher Smith, Emily Gallezzo, Katlin Gallezzo, Ashley Gallezzo.Visiting hours will be on Sunday June 5, from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home 29 Winter Street, Sanford, Maine. A mass of christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Sanford. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.Arrangements are under the direction of the Lafrance-Lambert & black Funeral Home 29 Winter Street, Sanford, Maine.
