Jack Lawrence

Jack Lawrence 100 a long time resident of Springvale, died Tuesday Feb. 28, at the home of his daughter in Sanford surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Halifax, England October 29, 1905 a son of Grace Lawrence. Jack moved to the US in 1920, and was educated in Sanford schools. He was employed at the former Goodall Textile Mills for 33 years until its closing in 1954. Jack later found employment at the former W.T. Grant store, Nasson College, and the former Universal Shoe Co. He later retired after 20 years as a custodian from the former Springvale National Bank. In his retirement Jack worked as a crossing guard in Springvale. Jack served as a volunteer firefighter for 33 years as well as the firehouse clerk. He was a 79 year member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church. He served the church as a deacon, trustee and was on the Board of Christian Education. He was also a 50 year member of the Sanford Masons.In 1929 Jack married the former Dorothy Philpott in Springvale. They were married for 54 years until her death. In 1986 he married Edith Pence Mullins. They lived in Springvale until her failing health in 2002, where it made it necessary for them to move to his daughters' home in Sanford. Edith died in 2005.Jack enjoyed bowling, playing cribbage, solving crossword puzzles, and listening to music. He espeically enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and spending time with his family. In October, Jack celebrated his 100th birthday. Family members came from as far away as Florida, Ohio and England to wish him well. He was amazed at so much attention, but was thrilled to have all his family under one roof. He will be sadly missed by all. Jack was pre-deacesed by a daughter, Sandra (Lawrence) Diamant in 1976. Survivors include his daughter Arlene (Lawrence) Hatch and his son Robert Lawrence both of Sanford, and his sister Jessie Cole, as well as nine grandchildren, 17 Great grandchildren and nine Great Great Grandchildren. He also has four stepgrandchildren and several nieces & nephews.In lieu of flowers, Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church Youth Group, 4-6 Pleasant St., Springvale, ME 04083.Visiting hours will be Thursday 5-8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 :00 PM Friday at the Funeral Home with the Reverend Dennis Reeves of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church.
