J. Miller Samuell

J. Miller Samuell, 78, of Sanford, died in Sanford on Thursday, March 3, 2011 after a long illness. Miller was born in Sanford, Maine on March 11, 1932, the son of Samuel L and Blanche (Fontaine) Samuell. He was a lifelong Maine resident and a graduate of St Ignatius High School, St Michael's College , and the Gorham Teachers College.Miller served in the U.S. Army in Korea immediately after the Korean War. Miller followed his love for history and became a teacher. He taught social studies for many years at Westbrook Junior High School in Westbrook, Maine. Prior to teaching in Westbrook he taught in Gloucester, Massachusetts and Parsonsfield, Maine. He enjoyed swimming in the ocean, walking on the beach, and keeping current on politics and world events. He took many trips across the country to visit family in Kentucky, historic sites, and many other areas that he found interesting. He especially enjoyed attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marilyn England Samuell; his six children Bethann Rohlfing and her husband John of St Louis Missouri; Maryleigh Holmes and her husband Andrew of Hollis Maine; Joseph Miller Samuell Jr. and his wife Debbie of Coventry, Rhode Island; Holly Hebert and her husband Tim of Charlotte, North Carolina; Stephen L. Samuell and his wife Maureen of Saratoga Springs, New York; Leiann Bammel and her husband Dale of Orlando, Florida; and thirteen grandchildren who range in age from 5 to 28. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 8th St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment will immediately follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Arrangements are under the direction of Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home in Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
