Herbert Allen Young

SANFORD–Herbert “Herb” Allen Young, 95, of Sanford Maine passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. He was married to Charlotte (Aldrich) Young on November 10, 1951. Herbert and Charlotte moved to Sanford, Maine in 1962 where they raised their family.

Herbert served in the Korean conflict from 1950 through 1953 as a Staff Sergeant with the 7th Infantry Division of the Army Corps of Engineers. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, he later became active with the Sanford Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9935. He served for a time as Post Commander as well as other offices in the VFW.

Herbert was a Master Plumber and was also employed for many years until his retirement at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as both a pipefitter in Shop 56 and as a Planner and Estimator. He was proud of the work he had been a part of on submarines such as the USS Thresher, the USS George Washington, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and the USS John Adams. During his employment he also had earned special assignment work in Groton CT, Charleston NC, in Holy Loch, Scotland and in Guam.

He was active for many years in the Free and Accepted Masons as a 3rd Degree Master Mason at the Tyrian Lodge in Mechanic Falls, . Additionally, he earned his 33rd degree in the Masonic Scottish Rite and was made a Shriner at Kora Temple in Lewiston.

Among Herbert’s recreational passions were deer and bird hunting, and fishing. His favorite hunting spot was at his father-in-law’s camp in Lovell, Maine. He fished at many locations including Sebago Lake, the Allagash, North Pond in Norway and Moosehead, Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes. After retirement, he took an interest in golf and had been a member of the Sanford Country Club.

He was also a woodworking hobbyist, having learned skills from his great uncle. He became adept at cabinet building and bookcase making.

Herb was predeceased by his wife Charlotte and his grandson Andrew.

Herb is survived by his four children: Arthur Young and his wife Denise of Hooksett, New Hampshire; Thomas Young and his wife Barbara of Graham, North Carolina, Susan Mitchell and her husband James of Springvale, Maine; and Allan Young and his wife Susan of Sanford, Maine. Herb also had seven grandchildren, Adam Young and his wife Jennifer, Michael Young and his wife Alyssa, Christopher Young and his wife Melissa, Gregory Bourque, Jeffery Mitchell and his wife Victoria, Justin Young and his wife Rachel, and Joshua Young and his wife Jessica. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Jack Young, Ana Mitchell, Emma Mitchell, Patrick Young, Luke Young and Madeleine Young.

Herbert spent the last months of his life at the Atria in Kennebunk. His family is forever grateful for the warmth and caring he received from Atria staff during his residence there.

The funeral will take place at the First Baptist Church, 905 Main Street, Sanford, Maine, on January 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Visiting hours will take place prior to the funeral at the First Baptist Church from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM. A luncheon will be served at the Church following the service.
