Henry J. Peters, Jr., 82, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief illness.
Born on March 26, 1944, in Portland, Maine, Henry was the son of Henry J. Peters, Sr. and Barbara (Hunter) Peters. He grew up in Windham, where he attended local schools and graduated from Windham High School in 1964.
Following high school, Henry proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country with honor. His military service remained one of the accomplishments of which he was most proud, and he continued to support fellow veterans throughout his life.
Henry was involved in several veterans and community organizations. He was an active member of AMVETS, where he served multiple terms as State Commander, the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks Lodge. He especially enjoyed Tuesday evenings during bingo nights at the lodge.
Professionally, Henry was employed with H&R Block, as a tax advisor. He had just completed his 39th tax season, a testament to his remarkable work ethic.
Outside of work, Henry enjoyed bowling, cheering on his beloved New York Yankees, and spending time with family and friends. Above all else, he was proud of his service, his family, and especially his daughter, Kayleigh.
Henry was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Margaret Peters; and his brothers, Larry Peters, Sr. and Bobby Peters.
He is survived by his daughter, Kayleigh and her partner Cory, of Lynn, Massachusetts; his companion, Pam Sawyer of Yarmouth; his stepdaughters, Heather Furbish and her husband Jon of Sanford, and Bethany Verrell; his cherished grandchildren, Julianna, Jedidiah, Lydia, Melody, and Spencer; his niece, Stephanie Turek (Alex) of Londonderry, New Hampshire; and his nephew, Larry Peters, Jr. and his wife Heather of Gray.
A celebration of Henry’s life will be held at a date, time, and location to be announced.
In honor of Henry, the family kindly requests that those attending wear his favorite color, red.
