Harriet Cassell Smith, 96, of River Road in Ogunquit, died on Saturday, July 23 at Huntington Commons-Bradford Court in Kennebunk.She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 9, 1909, the daughter of Harry and Alice Cassell, and graduated from Goucher College in June, 1930. After summering in Ogunquit for more than 10 years, she married George F. Smith, the owner of Dunelawn, and moved to Ogunquit in September, 1954. Together, Harriet and George successfully owned and operated Dunelawn as a hotel and restaurant for more than 35 years.Harriet was a longtime member of St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor, and she and George were active in the relocation of St. George's in 1982. Following the death of her husband in February, 1986, Harriet was a volunteer at Harbor Home in York Harbor, where she was one of the original "pie ladies." She was an advocate for recycling in Ogunquit, and participated with others in the struggle to preserve the dunes at Ogunquit Beach.Harriet was predeceased by her husband, George F. Smith , and her sister, Charlotte Cassell Thom of Tampa, FL. Surviving are her sister in law, Barbara Hilty, of York Harbor, her brother in law, Victor Thom of Tampa, her children, Henry Milburn and his wife, Barbara of Cumberland, Maine, Susan D. Meffert of York, Maine and Elizabeth M. Stevens of Woburn, MA, two nieces, as well as 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.A memorial service will be held in her honor at St. George's during the fall.
