Gwen M. Chadbourne

Gwendolyn M. Chadbourne, 68, longtime resident of North Berwick and resident of Prescott Heights Apartment, died peacefully Thursday morning, September 18, 2003 at YorkHospital. She was born in Cape Porpoise, Maine September 26, 1934 the daughter of Wendell P. and Charlotte Mabel (Bracy) Cluff, Sr. and attended local schools. She graduated from Kennebunk High School with the Class of 1953. Gwen and her siblings would "borrow" a skiff and row out to Goat Island. She loved being around the pier and watching the "locals" bring in their catch.Gwen was a talented and gifted musician. She played accordion and piano from an early age. She played her first dance with her father, "Rap" Cluff at the Atlantic Hall when she was 17 years of age. From there, she played at several of the hotels in Kennebunk,Kennebunkport, and Wells. She substituted as organist on many occasions at the Acton Congregational Church. Mrs. Chadbourne played with "Uncle Fud and the Haybinders" and later with the "Generation Gap" entertaining people at fundraisers and dances. She looked forward to visiting her daughter, Tammy in Newport, NH and playing for the Newport Senior Center.Gwen worked on the Maine Turnpike, Exit 3 in her teen years and met and married Floyd J. Chadbourne August 5, 1957. He predeceased her in 1988. In 1960, they made their home in North Berwick. Mrs. Chadbourne worked locally in the mills and the Value House Warehouse. For many years, she was a shift manager at the Seven Eleven Store in Springvale before she retired. She was a driver for the North Berwick Rescue Squad when the squad first began. Mrs. Chadbourne enjoyed line dancing, board games and going out with the "girls" for bingo.An avid reader, she loved reading mystery novels, especially P.D. James. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her giving nature and being a Nana to her grandchildren.Survivors include three sons: David A. Cluff of Los Angeles, CA; John S. Chadbourne of Wells, ME and Jonathan A. Welch of Kennebunk, Maine. Three daughters: Tammy L. Chadbourne of Springvale, ME and formerly of Newport, NH; Sandy M. Goodale of Wells Branch, ME and Kelly L. McGuire of Sanford; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; her brother, David M. Cluff of Arundel and Naples, FL, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by two brothers: Wendell P. Cluff of Cape Porpoise and John Wayne Cluff of Kennebunkport.Calling hours will be Saturday, Sept. 20th from 7 - 9 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Funeral Services will be Sunday, Sept 21st. at 1:00PM at theHeald Funeral Home with Sr. Kathleen Haight, RCD, officiating. Burial will be later at the Arundel Cemetery in Kennebunkport.Memorial donations may be made to the West Kennebunk Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, W.
