Freeport-Gus William Barber of Soddy Daisy, TN peacefully passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Dementia on August 31,2023. Gus was born in Chattanooga, TN on December 24, 1947 to Tula Jane and Tom Barber. Gus grew up surrounded by loved ones and learned the value of hard work throughout his youth. As a result of his strong upbringing and values, Gus proudly served as a member of the United States Army. After returning from war in Vietnam and being discharged from the Army, Gus began his career with US Pipe and Foundry finally retiring after 34 years of service. Gus married his best-friend and wife Carolyn on March 27, 1967. Throughout their 56 year marriage they enjoyed cruises, picnics, gardening, and spending time with loved ones. Together they have passed on their love and morals to 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Anyone who knew Gus would describe him as a generous soul; giving everything he could to family and friends when needed. Gus also donated to Disabled American Veterans, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the Chattanooga Firefighters Association for several years. Gus will also be remembered as an avid basketball fan, a spur of the moment country singer, and a ferocious poker player who often defeated opponents with huge bluffs followed up by his classic grin that will never be forgotten. Gus is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sisters, Mary and Frances; daughter, Tracy; son, John; grandsons, Thomas, Toby, Owen, and Crosby; granddaughters, Amanda and Chloe; several nieces and nephews. Gus was predeceased by his mother, Tula Jane; Father Tom; brothers, Gary, William, and Sonny; sisters, Rachael, Margaret, and Oodie; cherished son, Mark.
