Grace L. Day, 101, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Portland.Grace was born in Saco on January 8, 1910 to Eugene and Elnora Moore. She grew up in Hollis where she attended local schools, graduating from Hollis High School in 1926. That same year she married Chester Day. Together they raised three children and spent the next 47 years together until his death in 1973. In 1970 they moved from Hollis to Waterboro. In 2007 Grace moved to Westbrook to live with her daughter.Grace spent her entire life caring for her home and her family. She was an excellent baker and made many doughnuts, cookies, breads and pies which she lovingly gave to her family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting and made countless afghans, hats and mittens. She would also make lap robes which she would donate to nursing homes to help keep the residents warm. Her favorite pastime was playing cards which she continued to do almost up until the time of her death. Grace will be remembered as a kind and loving woman who was very devoted to her family. She will be dearly missed.Grace was predeceased by her husband; a son, Kenneth Day; a daughter-in law, Jean Day; a son-in-law, Gilbert Foley; a grandson, Dwight McPherson; four brothers, Eugene, Almond, Ernest and Guy Moore and a sister Elnora Huelix.Surviving are a son, Donald Day and his wife Virginia of East Waterboro; a daughter, Barbara Foley of Westbrook; five grandchildren, Craig Foley and his wife Sally, Dennis Day, Dawn Drown and her husband Scott, Derryl McPherson and his wife Julie and Douglas McPherson and his wife Nancy and ten great grandchildren, Alexandra and Samuel Foley, Sarah and Jessica Day, Matt and Kaylee Drown, Benjamin, Brandon and Christopher McPherson and Bethany Gaudett.The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Mercy Hospital and VNA Home Health and Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Grace and her family during her final days. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 10th at the Wakefield Cemetery located on Route 202 in Hollis.
