GERTRUDE THOMPSONShapleigh and YorkGertrude A. Thompson, 83, of York, a longtime resident of Shapleigh, died April 7 at home following a lengthy illness.She was born in Athens on February 28, 1922, a daughter of Guy and Evelyn (Savage) Tuttle and attended Athens schools. She lived in Newport for a while where she apprenticed as a hairdresser.She moved to Kittery in 1942, and in 1943, she married Eugene Thompson. They moved to Rockland, MA where she was employed with Maiden Form. She also worked for 15 years with Sigma Instruments in Braintree, MA. They moved to Shapleigh in 1970.Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Eugene in 1997, by a sister, Alta Tuttle and by two brothers, Malcolm and Carl.Survivors include her son Robert Thompson and his wife Eleanor of York, granddaughter Robin Cogger and her husband Scott of York, grandson Robert W. Thompson, Jr., and his wife Robyn of York, grandson Ryan Thompson of Kittery, four great-grandchildren, four brothers, Roland Tuttle and Robert Tuttle, both of Kittery, Everett Tuttle of Parker, CO, Paul Tuttle of Dover, NH, three sisters, Pearl "Pat" Tuttle and Ethel Curtis, both of Croydon, NH, Amy Ludlow of Rollinsford, NH, and several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are through the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Foundation, 10 Bangor Street, Suite F, Augusta, ME 04330, or to the Beacon Hospice York Branch, 54B Atlantic Place, So.
