Gerard MauraisSanfordGerard Maurais, 79, died at Goodall Hospital on December 14, 2001.Mr. Maurais was born in Sanford, on February 9, 1922, the son of Edward and Eva Bernier Maurais and attended local schools there.During World War II he served in the Navy. After the war he was self- employed in electrical and refrigeration services. He later worked at Raytheon in Andover, MA. Pease Air Force Base in Newington, NH and then served as maintenance electrician for the Sanford Public Schools, before retiring in 1983.During the 60's & 70's, "Jerry" (WA1BMG) was active in amateur radio, using morse code as a preference to communication. One of his retirement activities involved mapping and cataloguing St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.Gerard was a kind, caring man who thought much of his family. He took great pride in their lives. His family remembers him as always being encouraging, understanding and supportive.He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris (Tetreau) Maurais, 4 sons, Thom of Standish, Owen, of Old Town, Edward of Biddeford and Robert of Windham, 3 daughters, Marie David, of Merrimack, NH, Margaret Maurais, of Sanford, and Judith Bass, of Longwood Florida. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren.A period of visitation will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2001, from 5-8 PM at Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale Maine.A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 17, 2001 at 9:30 AM at St. Ignatius, Martyr Roman Catholic Church, 10 St. Ignatius Street, Sanford Maine.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 191 Main Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
