George Edward Ellingwood

George E. Ellingwood, 91, longtime resident of Sanford, died December 23, 2003 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Sanford, August 4, 1912 a son of William and Ethel (Wright) Ellingwood and was a graduate of Sanford High School. Mr. Ellingwood worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for five years during World War II. For 55 years, George was a plumber and owned his own plumbing business, Ellingwood's Plumbing for 35 years. Mr. Ellingwood was a member of the Sanford First Baptist Church where he served as president, deacon, librarian and on many other committees' through the years. His faith and church family meant a great deal to him and sustained him. He was a member and past officer of several Masonic bodies including, Preble Lodge # 143, White Rose Chapter #54, Bethany Commandery #24 and St. Amand Commandery # 20 of Knight Templers Chadcedon Conclave, and the Red Cross of Constantine #5.Also, George belonged to the Past Officers Association #1, the Kora Temple Shrine, Knights of the York Cross of Honor Pine Tree Privacy # 65 and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Mr. Ellingwood enjoyed traveling, sports and his cottage on Mousam Lake. He was a gentle man and a gentleman, one who was loved very much by his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Porell) Ellingwood and his son, Barry W. Ellingwood both of Sanford. Also, by several cousins.He was predeceased by an infant brother.Graveside Service will be held later in the spring at Oakdale Cemetery with Rev. Virginia Gass, officiating.
