Geoffrey Titherington, respected and beloved business leader who dedicated his life to civic service, has died at the age of 80
Geoffrey Titherington of Sanford, Maine died peacefully in the arms of his family on May 23rd 2026 after living courageously with Alzheimer’s for several years.
Born in New York City in 1946 to Dr. John Bisbrowne Titherington and Barbara Ferguson Titherington, Geoff lived on the 6th floor of an apartment building across the street from Columbia Presbyterian, the same hospital in which he was born and where his father was a surgical resident. He loved to play in the park, visit the Natural History Museum and torture the downstairs neighbor – along with his younger brother Greg – with their heavy footsteps.
In 1951, Geoff’s 6th birthday, the family moved to Falmouth. He recalled in his autobiography assignment for freshman English class, “Although I didn’t have a party, I was glad we moved to Maine because we could do many things including have snow fights and build snow forts, climb trees and make treehouses, and have friends run in and out of the house without having someone bang on the pipes or the ceiling.”
As a child Geoff developed the deep sense of community that would guide his life. During his early years, Geoff was involved in Boy Scout Troop 44 in West Falmouth, ME where he reached the Star Scout Rank and was voted into the Order of the Arrow. He had many fond memories of his scouting experiences and the Boy Scout Slogan, “Do A Good Turn Daily” truly reflected how Geoff lived his life.
A National Merit Scholar at Falmouth High School (earning him the nickname ‘Merit’) Geoff went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono, where he studied art and played on the soccer team. He built a life defined not only by a hardworking spirit, but by service to others and a deep investment in his community. Upon graduation in 1969, Geoff moved his young family to Sanford and began his career as General Manager of Shaw’s Ridge Farm, and later founded Titherington Gallery, an Art and Framing store. In 1985, Geoff purchased Bonanza Steakhouse and for over 35 years, the restaurant was a treasured place to gather and eat. Under Geoff’s leadership, Bonanza provided many employment options for the community; for some it was their very first job, for others, via the nonprofit Waban, it was a way to build self confidence and a sense of belonging. Additionally, Geoff provided more than $30,000 dollars in scholarships to kids attending college.
It was Geoff’s commitment to community philanthropy that most defined his heart and his impact. While impossible to name them all, among his many community board positions where he served as chair or president include Kennebunk Savings Bank, Goodall Hospital, Sanford-Springvale chapters of the American Red Cross, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis
Club, and YMCA, the York County Community College, Springvale Public Library and the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford. He has received numerous awards for his service as well, including the Citizen Award from the Rotary Club, recognizing “an outstanding adult who has exhibited a special appreciation for the community and made a significant effort to improve it.”
Geoff was a founding member of the American Legion Baseball team and founding board member of the Sanford Mainers LLC Baseball team. Drawing from Sanford’s rich history in baseball, the group brought America’s favorite pastime back to Sanford’s Goodall Park for the good of the community and to create a legacy for Sanford. He served on their board of directors and managed the concession stand for many years. In 2019, the Mainers and the Town of Sanford dedicated the Goodall Park concession stand to him in honor of his 17 years of service.
He cherished his lifelong friends – and Phi Eta Kappa brothers – Stan, Mac, Kerry, Paul, and George. For over 40 years, the friends owned a log cabin together deep in the Maine North Woods. They would gather to fish, hunt, ski, snowmobile, and argue 3-4 times a year. Geoff was the undisputed cribbage champ and prankster. He never caught a fish though, winter or spring.
Geoff also found great joy in travel, community events, live music, comedy shows, and cheering passionately for UMaine hockey – his license plate proudly reflected his devotion. He and his wife, Rachel, especially enjoyed trips to the Virgin Islands and the many travels connected to Geoff’s civic and community work throughout Sanford, opportunities that allowed them to spend time together while supporting causes and organizations important to them both.
Above all else, Geoff most cherished time spent with his children and their families. Summers around the pool were filled with cannonballs, laughter, wonderful conversation, Dad jokes, playful jabs, and Geoff at the grill serving his world-famous racks of ribs while surrounded by the people he loved most.
Geoff is predeceased by his theatrical and fun-loving younger brother Gregory. He is survived by his wife Rachel Titherington, sister Jeanne Titherington, and 6 children who were lucky to call him Dad: Tiffany Titherington, Tari Pendleton, Tyler Titherington, Randi Blaisdell, Jaimi Titherington, and Kaiti Titherington. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and loved ones whose lives were enriched by his humor, generosity and love.
We will miss you and your great hair.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to The Lodges in Sanford as well as to the wonderful Affinity Hospice team, Sally and Bethany, for the loving and gentle care they provided to Geoff in his greatest time of need.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black-Heald & Walker of Sanford, Maine.
A private celebration of life will be held at the end of June in Sanford, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating blood to the American Red Cross, a cause that Geoff supported throughout his entire life. Additionally, donations to the Sanford Springvale area YMCA and United Way would be appreciated and ensure Geoff’s legacy of supporting his community continues.

May the love you gave always surround you. ❤️
Honored I got to work for this man for 3 and a half years. Always a kind word and really cared about his employees. Wouldnt trade the time I worked for him for anything. Thoughts with his family and may he RIP 🙏
Geoff was my first ever boss. Such a nice guy always willing to listen and help. So many memories working with him at Bonanza. He will forever be missed by so many people. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family💙
Geoff definitely loved to have fun and joke around. One memory I’ll never forget was when he put $100 on a table just to prank my coworker, and we all stood behind the salad bar mirrors watching as he started cleaning the table without noticing it there. Geoff got such a kick out of moments like that.
He genuinely cared about his employees, and it showed every single day. He touched so many kids’ lives by giving them the opportunity to become part of the Bonanza family. He made people feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
Geoff was truly an icon in Sanford, and he will be deeply missed by so many. Sending love and prayers to his family and everyone whose life he touched.

My heart breaks for you & his family. He was one of the first people I came to know when I moved to Maine in 1975. I was one of his best customers at his art & framing shop in Springvale. Who knew that you, Randi, would become one of my daughter’s closest friends?! And Jaimi & Kaiti would often be at our home too.
It goes without saying, that Goeff Titherington had a life well lived. Love & sympathy, diana
We miss you immeasurably already!

Rachel, I’m so sorry to hear of Geoff’s passing. I always loved and looked forward to seeing him at Wabans Telethon. We would stand there and talk for quite a while about anything and everything. He was a quiet, elegant man to be around. Remember all your happy memories. They will help you through this.
LEGEND is the word. Geoff raised the bar with his generosity and kindness. He was a giant in our community and was a spectacular family man, business owner, philanthropist, and citizen. I will miss seeing him in our neighborhood and at the Performing Arts Center. Just the greatest guy. My sincere condolences to Rachel and his entire family. He will be deeply missed.

Probably 18 years ago a number of the staff members of our Sanford bank branch location were struck by a vehicle while in a cross walk, following an evening event. I received a call from my boss, asking if I could temporarily switch branches from my regular branch in Eliot, and go to the Sanford Office the following morning and get things up and running while they were coming up with a staffing plan. Of course I said I would, but I was nervous because I had never worked at the Sanford location. The following morning, when I unlocked the branch doors to start the day, the first person through the door was Geoff. At the time he was the Chairperson of our Board, and he was there to reassure me that whatever support we needed he would make sure we got it. He showed up every day for weeks making sure we had everything we needed. He was always a true gentleman and a kind and decent person, and I am a better person from having known him. I am sad I won’t see him again, but I am grateful to have known him and experienced his caring and compassion.
Rachel & Family..my sincere condolences on the loss of Geoff. He was truly a great man!
I am truly sorry for your loss. One of the kindest man man I’ve encountered
Everyone remembers Geoff from the Bonanza days. He was always very kind and always smiling. I remember back in 1998, My son who was five years old at the time burned his finger from the steam on the hot buffet. Geoff made sure he was OK and gave us a free meal on him. He was also our neighbor down the street. Very sorry for the loss. Our condolences to his family.
Geoff invited me to serve on the board of Literacy Volunteers a truly inspiring organization. He was truly an inspiration to the Sanford community with his tireless dedication to community causes & organizations. A truly kind & thoughtful person.who will be greatly missed.Hans so enjoyed the once a month polka nights & his shrimp on a stick .Our heartfelt 💕condolences to Rachel & family
Geoff took me under his wing, like he did with many others, when I was a student-athlete at Sanford High School who was looking to develop and progress to become a collegiate student-athlete. He took me to luncheons at his community organizations, introduced me as a young member of the community to his fellow members, and let them know what my goals and aspirations were. He introduced me to our community, taught me the values of community, and more importantly what it meant to be part of the community. He followed, and celebrated, my accomplishments in high school, college, and beyond. I will never forget when I signed a professional baseball contract in Arizona and my family sent me pictures of the Bonanza sign in Sanford that shared a post about this accomplishment with the community. I will Forever have Much Love and Respect for one of the most influential role models that I have had in my lifetime. Stacey and I send our Love & Heart Felt Condolences to Rachel and the whole family.
Geoff has been a friend for over 60 years. His humor, loyalty and great sense of community will be greatly missed.
Jeff was my boss at Shaws Ridge back in the day – actually back quite a few days back! I made the ice cream and he was a great boss. More importantly, he was a great human. I enjoyed working with him as he personified drive and dedication to his work and was always up for a witty quip regarding life’s path. Through the years we would cross paths – always the same smile and some articulate observation of the surroundings. He never failed to put a smile on my face when we touched base. The world needs more Geoff Titheringtons…
I called on Geoff for business for many years and always appreciated the courtesy, attentiveness and respect with which he greeted me as we conducted our meetings. He was clearly a leader in his community, a great philanthropist, a champion for the less fortunate, and a genuinely nice man. Rest in peace, Geoff, you will be missed.
Rachel and family, I am so sorry to learn of Jeff’s passing. Jeff worked with my husband at Shaws Ridge. Such a nice person and always had a smile. He was well respected and loved by all that had the opportunity to know him and interact with him. May all your wonderful memories help carry you through this difficult time. Another bright star to shine in the Heavens.
Rest easy. We the Class of 1963 YACHTSMEN will take it from here. RIP
