Gary T. Cockburn 1934-2024 SANFORD—Gary Thomas Cockburn, 89, of Ossipee, New Hampshire, died peacefully Thursday, March 14, 2024 in Sanford. Gary was born December 15, 1934, in Bridgton, Maine, the son of David and Mildred (Larrabee) Cockburn. He served in the United States Air Force for four years as a mechanic, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Gary was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Betty, Horace, Philip and Donald. Gary was an avid outdoorsman. He spent his free time fishing, hunting, and skiing and had an amazing group of friends who thought of him as either a father or a brother. He was a lover of animals, especially English springer spaniels which he had for his entire adult life and were more like family than pets. He is survived by his children, Caren Martineau and her companion Art Libby, William Cockburn and his companion Sue Kinne, Jeff Cockburn, his granddaughter Morgan Lavoie, Kevin Cockburn and Gary’s long-time companion Annette Silver Cockburn. The family would like to thank his many doctors and nurses at Wentworth-Douglass hospital. He often said that Fridays were his favorite day of the week because he got to see “his girls” at the hospital. We also want to thank the dedicated employees of Pinnacle Nursing Care and Compassus Hospice Care for making his last days happy ones. He loved them all and we are told that the feeling was mutual. We also want to thank his many friends, both near and far for visiting him and regaling us with stories from the past. We will never forget the smiles you all brought to his face. A service will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, May 2 at 2:00. A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge from 3:00 to 5:00 pm

Guestbook

  1. Loved sharing time with my Uncle Gary the few times I’ve seen him over the years. Always a big hug and knew you were loved. He loved getting my one-year old son to laugh when he visited us in VA 1993. More recently enjoyed sharing our love of the New England Patriots when we visited him in NH 2018. Condolences to my cousins Caren, Billy, Jeff, and Kevin.

  2. Gary has been a good friend and neighbor since I moved to Center Ossipee 18 years ago. I’m glad that I got to work for him during his final summer on “The Mountain” as we had some good laughs together. He was a small in stature yet tough as nails Yankee with a good heart. Marlene and I will miss him greatly!
