Freda Stevens

Freda E. Stevens, 89, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in an Athol, MA nursing home after along illness.She was born in Alfred, Maine, a daughter of John H. Stevens and Beatrice L. (Brown ) Stevens. She was a long time resident of Alfred. She was a graduate of Alfred High School, the former Gorham Normal School and earned a master's degree in education from Boston University.Miss Stevens began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Mirror Lake, NH. She later taught elementary grades in the Acton and Sanford, Maine school system and then taught first grade students for more than 37 years in the Newton, MA school system, teaching several generations of children how to read.She was active in church and community activities in Waltham and also in Ocean Park, Maine, where she owned a summer cottage for more than 50 years.Surviving Miss Stevens is a sister, Mildred R. Shepherd, of Athol, MA., a brother, Richard T. Stevens, of Meredith, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews of several generations. Three sisters and two brothers predeceased her. Dorothy Morey, and Carroll Stevens, both of Alfred Maine. John Stevens, of Sanford Maine, Ruby Betts, of Beverly, MA and Lillian Jakeman, of Ocean Park, Maine.A memorial service will be held in the spring at a time to be announced. Burial will be in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery, Alfred, Maine.
