Sanford, MaineFred Colin McMath, Sr. 82, of Sanford, died Wednesday November 13, 2002 at The Goodall Hospital in Sanford with family members present.He was born in Needham, MA, on August 7, 1920, the son of Colin and Lottie Mae (McNutt) McMath.Mr. McMath graduated Newton Vocational School trained as a mechanic in 1938. Following graduation , he earned a letter while playing semi-pro football in Needham.In 1940 he enlisted in the Army serving 5 years, two and a half in Africa and Italy during WWII. Upon returning home, he joined the Needham Fire Department, retiring in 1968 after 21 years of service.Following this retirement he owned and operated a motel in Wells, ME. in the early 70's. In the late 70's he owned operated a 220 acre dairy farm in New York State.After retiring from farming, he located in Sanford, ME, at which time he began driving a school bus in the Sanford community for the next twenty years, retiring in 1990. He spent most of his remaining years enjoying his family and volunteering for Meals on Wheels.Fred enjoyed bowling, camping, televised sports and reading until his eyesight was compromised. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Natalie of Sanford; a son Fred, Jr., of South Berwick; daughters Dianna McMath of Franklin, NH, Jodi McMath of N.B. and Wendi Dubois of Somersworth, NH; six grandchildren Traci Hlavac and her husband Brian, Lisa Hardin, Justin McMath, Jill McMath, Eric McMath, Sean McMath and Nicole Dubois; 2 great grandchildren Danny and Sophia. He is also survived by two nieces Phyllis Freeman and Jean Whiteman. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday at Heald Funeral Home 580 Main St. Springvale, Maine.
