Frank E. Higgins, Sr., of Sanford, Maine died Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford. He was born in Kennebunkport, Maine, eldest son of Everett C. and Mary (McLaughlin) Higgins. During his life, Mr. Higgins was very active within the community and some of his special accomplishments include: President of Kennebunkport Senior High School, Class of 1931, Founded Arundel Cabinet Works in 1948 that designed, manufactured and installed commercial and domestic interior. The company became incorporated in 1951. Mr. Higgins facilitated the planning and building of the Kennebunkport Consolidated School.In 1952, Mr. Higgins relocated Arundel Cabinet Works, Inc. to Wells from Kennebunkport. While a resident of Wells, his desire to be involved within the community continued. He served on the Town Budget Commission and Wells Budget Board. He was Chairman of the Wells Library Founding Committee, Chairman of the New Wells Town Hall building Committee, Chairman of the Town of Wells Medical Building Committee and Chairman of the Maine State Grange growth and executive Committee. Mr. Higgins was the first President and Founder of the Wells Chamber of Commerce in 1959 and the first President of the Lions Club of Wells.Mr. Higgins was also past Master of Master Arundel Grange of Kennebunkport, past Master York Pomona Grange, past youth director Maine State Grange and past Chairman and secretary of Maine State Grange Executive Committee. He held the Chairman position of the Fourth of July Parade Committee.Mr. Higgins moved to Sanford in 1967. He soon became active as Chairman of Sanford Airport Advisory committee. Mr. Higgins served as a member of the Sanford Town Club, Chairman of the York County Democratic Committee as well as the Town Budget Committee. Frank founded Pinebrook Pony Racing Track and served as Director of the U.S. Pony Trotting Association. He was owner of Pinebrook Rabbit Processing. He was a former President of the Sanford Rotary Club, Chairman of the Transportation Committee and member of the Town -Waste -Recyling Committee.In 1990, Mr. Higgins moved north to Bingham. Once again, Mr. Higgins volunteered and served as Chairman of the committee for updating and expanding the sewer system of the Town of Bingham. He was past President of the Kennebec Valley C.of C. and the upper Kennebec Valley Trails. Frank was past Vice President of Kennebec Valley Tourism Council, member and past President of Baker Mtn. Ski Club, Bingham Lions Club, Bingham Budget Committee. As an outdoor enthusiast, Frank was a member of the Federal Scenic Highway Committee Route 201.Frank lived a rich and full life. He touched many with his dedicated service and welcomed the opportunity to serve within the communities he called home.Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sally (Sherman) Higgins, His children: George M. and his wife, Anita and Frank Jr. and his wife, Pamela. Constance J.H. and her husband, John Glenn. Karen Cote and companion, Wayne Brickett; Charles Hussey and Michael Higgins. Grandchildren: John III, Geofry, Matthew, Joshua and Kate Glenn. Kimberly Guerrette. Melissa and Nicholas Higgins; Cyndi and Jeffrey Taylor; Stephanie Riley, Shannon Cote and Danielle Hussey. Also, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.His two sisters, Mary Bowler and Louise Lowell also survive him. Mr. Higgins was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Ralph, Clifford and Kenneth, and his sisters, Blanche, Ruth, and Doris. Also, by his first wife, Patricia (Duggan) Higgins. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, Feb. 27th. At 11:00 Am At the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Burial will be later at Arundel Cemetery in Kennebunkport.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Animal Welfare Society, Inc. P.O. Box 43 - Old Holland Road, West Kennebunk, ME 04094-0043.
