Frances M. Scaccia passed away peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by members of her loving family at Goodall Hospital in Sanford following a brief illness.Mrs. Scaccia, the daughter of John H. Robbins, Sr. and Catherine van Newenhaus, was born in Boston in 1924. The family permanently settled in Norfolk, Massachusetts. Mrs. Scaccia, at the age of sixteen, was the youngest graduate of her Walpole High School class of 1940. Following her graduation, she attended the Catherine Gibbs Business School in Boston. For many years thereafter she worked as an administrative assistant at the Foxboro Company. In 1948 Frances married Nicholas Scaccia in Franklin, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter, the Scaccias settled in Sanford to raise a family. For nearly 20 years beginning in the early 1970s, Mrs. Scaccia served as administrative and medical assistant with Dr. Scaccia in his medical practice. The Scaccias proudly ran a "free baby clinic" for the disadvantaged to promote early preventive care.For many years Mrs. Scaccia was a member of and active fundraiser for the DebRA Foundation dedicated to the cure of a rare skin disorder which had taken the lives of two Scaccia daughters, Laurie Rose and Linda Jo.Central to Mrs. Scaccia's life was her family. Deep enjoyment came from summer family gatherings at the Hidden Lake cottage in Newfield. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed poetry. In her later years as a student at the York County Senior College in Springvale, she proudly recited from memory Frost's "The Road Not Taken".She was an avid Red Sox fan like her father before her, joyfully recounting her father's stories about traveling in a horse drawn wagon as water boy for the old Boston Braves.Mrs. Scaccia was a member of the Sanford Boosters Club, served as secretary of the Women's Auxiliary of the Saco Osteopathic Hospital and enjoyed tulip gardening. She especially enjoyed the many years of golf she shared with her husband Nick at the Sanford Country Club and Province Lake Country Club.Mrs. Scaccia is survived by her son Nicholas C. Scaccia, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of Scarborough; son David F. Scaccia and his wife Theresa of Kittery; daughter Nancy Skapinsky and her husband Peter of Cape Elizabeth. She also leaves her brother John Robbins of Norfolk, Massachusetts, grandson Matthew Scaccia and five granddaughters, Jenna Scaccia, Lauren Scaccia, Kaley Skapinsky, Annie Skapinsky and Jillian Scaccia. Visiting hours will be from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday at Holy Family Church. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
