Flora (Whittemore) Zappala, 92, of Sanford, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Cedar Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Skowhegan, following a brief illness. She was born on June 11, 1918, in Skowhegan, a daughter of the late Alton Sr., and Izetta Pearl Whittemore. Flora resided in Skowhegan until the age of 38 years old. Fresh out of high school she worked with her "Pop" at his restaurant until she married. Eventually Flora moved to Sanford where she worked at the Sanford Shoe Shop. She supported herself while helping many with her own spare money. She managed to save enough money each year so she could buy herself something new. She loved going shopping with her "gal" friends and would speak often of those times. She always looked forward to her visits in Skowhegan. Two years ago, she left her apartment in Sanford to go "home" to visit her brothers in Skowhegan for what was to be the last time. Flora was provided with the proper care and attention she needed by the staff during those last moments at the Cedar Ridge Rehabilitation Center.She lived a rich life, because that was important to her. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, loving all of her family.Flora is predeceased by her husband, John Sr., brothers, Alton and his wife, Loretta, Joe and his wife, Virginia, Warren, sisters, Margaret and her husband, Clayton, Tina and her husband Jimmy, Katherine and her husband, Edward.Flora is survived by her brothers, Alton Jr., and his wife, Tilly, Henry and his wife, Shirley, daughters, Joanne and Debbie, son, John Jr., and his wife, Linda, granddaughters, Kelly and her husband David, Cindy, grandsons, John, Guy, Joseph, Anthony, great granddaughters, Ashley, Jessica and Ariana, great grandsons, Gavin, Dillon, Brayden, great great granddaughter, Farrah, many nieces, nephews, plus many other family members that were devoted to Flora throughout her life, especially the past two years.A funeral service for Flora will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at 3PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Visiting hours will begin at 1PM until the time of the funeral service.
