Esther Goodwin, 91, of Shapleigh, died November 12 at the Newton Center in Sanford after a long illness.She was born in Coventry, VT on March 15, 1914, a daughter of George and Loretta (Putney) LaCross. She came to this area as a youngster and was a 1931 graduate of Sanford High School.She was employed over the years as a cook in the Shapleigh school system and was the dietician at the former Nasson College in Springvale for several years. More recently, she served as the librarian at the Shapleigh Public Library, retiring 10 years ago.A Shapleigh resident since 1932, she was an active member of the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church. For many years, she served as the historian for the Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society.Her husband, Jack Goodwin, died in 1994, and her son, Norman P. Goodwin died in 1988.Survivors include two daughters, Lois Greenleaf of W. Newfield, Janet Morrow of Saco, 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandsons.A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday at 2 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, with the Rev. Jason Vigue, pastor of the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Grove Cemetery in No. Shapleigh.The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Shapleigh Public Library Book Fund or the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church.
