Elwyn D. Johnson, 90, of Alfred, died on Monday, May 24, 2004 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford. He was born in Berwick, Maine on June 25, 1913, the second of four sons to Dana and Carrie (Ridlon) Johnson. He attended Sanford High School for three years, then moved to Alfred and graduated from Alfred High School in 1931. Elwyn married the love of his life, the late Ethel M. (Bickford) Johnson in 1940, and they resided in Sanford briefly, then on Bennett Road and Woods Edge, Alfred, the remainder of their life together.He worked at Stevens's sawmill for two years, followed by 20 years service with the Goodall Sanford Mills with brother Harry. When the mill closed in 1956, he worked several years at Waterboro Tannery and Sanford Tech. From 1963 to 1968, Elwyn worked with brother Albert at Pioneer Plastics. He retired from Wasco Sanford in 1976 with seven years service.Elwyn proudly served in the U. S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Kalk in the South Pacific campaign during World War II, and was in Manila Bay during the peace signing in 1945. He was a member of veteran's Brown-Emmons Post #138 Sanford for over 50 years. His interests were family and friends, Boston Red Sox, and hunting (as a young man). He was a man who listened much, talked little, and possessed a witty sense of humor enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.Surviving are his two sons Arthur and Roderick; two grandchildren, Timothy and Trisha; a great grandson Clinton; two brothers, Richard and Albert of Alfred, and a sister-in-law Jessie Allen of Alfred. He leaves behind many cousins and friends, and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at The Heald Funeral Home, Springvale on Saturday, May 29th at 1:00p.m. A reception for friends and family will be held after the Service at the Alfred home of Robert and Eleanor (Johnson) Brown.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alfred Fire and Rescue, P.O.
