Ellen Phillips Hall, passed away peacefully in the morning of November 22, 2003 at Greenwood Nursing Center, due to complicating renal failure resulting from Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Albany, NY September 3, 1921 a daughter of Grace and Lloyd Phillips of Ravena, NY. She was the fifth of nine children.Following her high school education and employment with the General Electric Company, she entered the US Coast Guard as a Spar during WW II serving as a transportation specialist and captain's driver. She was one of only two women in the motor pool and was chosen to drive not only superior officers but also movie stars, such as Caesar Romero, who was appearing in USO performances in Cleveland, Ohio. Much to her surprise, Mr. Romero asked her to join him for breakfast before going to the theater.After leaving the military, she settled in Maryland with her husband and baby daughter, Susan. During the ten years in Maryland, she added a second daughter, Nancy, to the family.Ellen relocated several times during her life: NY, California, Oklahoma, Florida, Virginia, Texas and Maine. She loved to travel and experience new adventures. She loved to read, be with children and loved animals. Siblings, Barbara Wagoner of NY, Susan Carhart of NY, John Phillips and wife Maryellen of Connecticut, daughters Susan Webster of Texas and Nancy Lamontagne of Sanford, granddaughters, Laura Davidson, Susan Hefner and grandson, Robert Cooper and several great grandchildren, survive her. Also, are sons-in law, Don Webster and Arthur Lamontagne. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the Chestnut Lawn Cemetery in NY on Wednesday, November 26, 2003.
