Elizabeth M. Smith, 81, longtime resident of James Avenue, Sanford died peacefully Sunday, January 30, 2005 at Goodall Hospital. She was born July 14, 1913 in Amesbury, Massachusetts a daughter of Earl and Maud (Allen) Metcalf. She grew up in Amesbury and Merrimack, Massachusetts and attended the local schools. Elizabeth married Joseph A. Smith, June 26, 1948 and together, they made Sanford their home. Mrs. Smith was a kind and caring woman. Her main focus in life was being a homemaker and raising her children. She enjoyed keeping the home running while her children and husband went about their daily activities. An excellent cook, Mrs. Smith made the best fudge in the neighborhood. She spent many weekends and summers camping in the White Mts. of New Hampshire with her family. Elizabeth was talented with her crocheting, making doll clothes, hats and gloves. She was an avid reader of Danielle Steel and enjoyed watching movies on the Lifetime channel. Survivors include two sons, Terry Smith of Dover, NH; Dennis Smith and wife, Ida Rose of Sanford; two sisters, Ruth Bessey of Merrimack, MA and Yvonne Cedres of Newburyport, MA; two grandchildren, Shawn Smith and wife, April of No. Berwick and Tammra Smith of Saco; many nieces and nephews and special friend, Bob James of Kennebunk. She was predeceased by her husband in 1982, Joseph A. Smith and by 5 brothers.Calling hours will be Thursday, February 3, 2005 from 6pm - 8pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St. Springvale. Funeral Services will be Friday, Feb. 4th. At 11:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Susan Kingman, officiating. Burial will be later in the spring at Oakdale Cemetery.
