Elizabeth Jones

Elizabeth "Betty" Jones, 85, longtime resident of Springvale, died at Sanford Health Care Center, November 24, 2004. Betty lived with her close friends, Steve and Sherri Clark in Shapleigh for 3 years. She had Sunday dinner with them for the past 30 years. She was born March 20, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA a daughter of Seymour L. and Elizabeth (Evans) Pinkham and was raised as a young child in Johnstown, PA. She graduated from Deering High School in 1937 and continued her education at Gorham Normal School, graduating from the University of Maine, Orono. Mrs. Jones taught in E. Lebanon and at the Shaker School in New Gloucester, ME. She had a long and distinguished teaching career in the Sanford/Springvale schools. Mrs. Jones taught at the Lincoln School, Longfellow, Edison and retired from Lafayette after 39 years, in 1979. While teaching at the Lafayette School, she implemented a breakfast program, which she paid for with her own money for many years. She would supply winter coats and shoes for those that needed an extra hand. Betty would send lilies and poinsettias to her close friends each Easter and Christmas. A true giver, she supported her church, Crossroads United Methodist Church, Sanford participating in the Women's Society, the candy table at the church fair and was a benefactor towards the building of the church. She belonged to the Maine Teachers Association, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the College Club. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter in Springvale. Betty loved her cats, Peter and Sally. Survivors include her nephew, Parker Jones of Mt. Sidney, Maryland and dear friends, Steve and Sherri Clark of Shapleigh and Helen Garnett of Sanford.Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 29, 2004 at 2 pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Calling hours will be from Noon until the hour of service. Burial will be private.Memorial donations may be made to the Crossroads United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 290, Sanford, ME 04073.
