Edna Howes

Edna Remick Howes, 97, a longtime resident of Hanson's Ridge in Sanford died December 5 at the Newton Center in Sanford.She was born in Limerick on July 16, 1908, the daughter of Lester C. and Carrie May (Robinson) Remick.She was employed over the years as a cashier at the former F. W. Woolworth Store in Sanford, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II, and then as a cashier again at the former W. T. Grant Store in Sanford. She and her husband Frank Howes built, and then for 10 years, owned and operated the former Bar-H Motel in Sanford. Mrs. Howes was an independent woman who at age 73, at the time of her husband's death, obtained her driver's license for the first time. She enjoyed breakfast with her friends at the Sunnyside Restaurant in Springvale and for over 20 years had Sunday dinner with her son Frank Howes, Jr. and his family. She was an avid reader, belonging to several book clubs and was a frequent visitor at the Springvale Public Library.She attended the Springvale First Baptist Church. She was a life member of Ruth Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Springvale and was a member of the Machiasport Historical Society.She was predeceased by her husband Frank Howes, a stepson Frank Howes, Jr. and by a granddaughter, Joy Weiss Morgan.Survivors include her stepdaughter Shirley Weiss and her husband Harvey of Sanford, 6 grandchildren, Lynne Weiss, Wendy Weiss, DO, Donald Howes, Cindy Gagne, Eric Howes, Heidi Camire, and 11 great grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at a later date.
