Edith Lawrence

Edith Mullins Lawrence died Sunday February 20, 2005 at the Newton Center in Sanford, ME.Mrs. Lawrence was born on October 11, 1909 in Grand Manan, N.B. Canada. She was the daughter of Alfred and Julia Plante Pence. She came to the United States in 1912 and attended Springvale schools until she left school in the ninth grade to help support her siblings. In her adulthood Mrs. Lawrence attended classes again and was an avid reader.In 1933 Edith married James F. Mullins and worked at the Allied and Universal Shoe Companies until her retirement; she also worked with the Springvale Firemen's Auxiliary. Mr. Mullins passed away in 1960, and after being widowed for 26 years Edith found love again and married Mr. Jack Lawrence. Together they traveled, visited friends, held afternoon tea parties and shared time and memories with their family. Edith also enjoyed knitting and sewing.Edith was an active member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church of Springvale. Over the years she served on various boards and committees, as well as teaching Sunday school. She often held fundraisers for the church mission work. Even when Edith was well into her 90's she found the strength and time to donate her services to the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church Resource Center.Predeceasing Edith was her previous husband James F. Mullins; their son, John C. Mullins, four brothers, and three sisters.She is survived by her husband Jack Lawrence of Sanford; a stepson Robert Lawrence of Sanford; a stepdaughter, Arlene Hatch of Sanford, with whom she lived. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Lyric Mullins West of Intervale, NH, Kevin Mullins and his children Haley and Isaac of Gardiner, ME, 33 step grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.A graveside service for Edith will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale in the spring of 2005.For those that desire, memorials may be made to the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, 4-6 Pleasant St., Springvale, ME 04083.
