Edith A. Butler, 88, of Gove Street, Sanford, died Friday at Goodall Hospital. She was born June 17, 1915, in Manchester, NH, the daughter of Hugh and Ann (Stockley) Solloway, but had lived here most of her life. Following high school, she graduated from the former Gorham Normal School and taught in a one- room schoolhouse in Acton. She then taught in the Sanford school system, retiring in 1976. She was a former Campfire Girl. She enjoyed the piano, was a great cook, loved animals, and enjoyed gardening. According to family members, Mrs. Butler was family centered, non-judgmental and was a giving person. They also recall many fond times at their camp on Bauneg Beg Pond. Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Francis Butler of Sanford; and their four children; Brenda Butler of Portland and Beverly Butler of Augusta, Bruce Butler of Poland and Robert Butler of Sanford. She also has many grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 Noon Monday in Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford. The Rev. David Maguire will officiate.
