Edgar "Bud" Howarth Greenhalgh, 82, of Granny Kent Pond Road in Shapleigh died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford following a period of declining health. He was born in Everett, MA, a son of Ernest M. and Amy (Halliday) Greenhalgh. He had lived in Shapleigh since 1989 and formerly lived in Warwick, Rhode Island.Bud grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange. He then attended Brown University in Providence, RI until he was drafted in the US Army in 1942. He served overseas in the European Theater where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In 1946, following WWII, he returned to Rhode Island and graduated from URI in 1948. He married and began raising his family while working as a design engineer for Brown & Sharpe tooling company of Providence.He then moved to California and worked as an engineer for Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank for several years before moving back to Rhode Island where he was a design engineer for TACO in Cranston. He retired from Reece Corporation in Gorham, Maine in 1985.He was an accomplished saxophone player in high school and college. He played on a cruise ship big band as a summer job in high school and played in bands at Brown and URI where he was also a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Music was always a part of his life and he enjoyed singing in the Lutheran Men's Chorus in Rhode Island.He handmade grandmother clocks and presented each of his children with a clock on their 5th wedding anniversaries.Besides his wife of 55 years, Doris Cook Greenhalgh of Shapleigh, Maine, he is survived by a daughter; Jane and Jim Early of Bedford, NH; 3 sons, Jeffrey and Diane Greenhalgh of Hebron, NH, Peter and Terry Greenhalgh of North Berwick, ME and Paul and Debbie Greenhalgh of Shapleigh, ME; a sister, Priscilla Bergner of Warwick, RI; 13 grandchildren, John and Taryn Macliver and Peter Early, Ryan Greenhalgh; Randy, Ricky and Darcey Dolliver, Roger, Kevin, Jordan and Skyler Greenhalgh; and Steven and Amy Greenhalgh; 3 great-grandchildren, Derek and Devin Dolliver and Matthew Jaenicke.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, ME, where relatives and friends may call on Friday from 7-9 PM and Saturday 1 hour prior to the service. The Rev. James Nason, pastor of the Crossroads United Methodist Church, will officiate.
