Dorothy L. Skerritt

May 26, 1928 ~ July 23, 2016
Portland-Dorothy Lorraine Skerritt passed away gracefully with familyJuly 23, 2016at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Dorothy was born in Portland, Maine, May 26, 1928 to Charles and Elizabeth Place. She grew up in the West End of Portland and graduated from Portland High School, class of 1946. She married Charles Lindy Skerritt in July 1953 and they had 55 wonderful years together before his passing in 2009. Together they settled in on Ocean Avenue raising their four children. They were fortunate to include their parents for several years as part of the family. Dot worked at New England Grain Company, Deering Ice Cream and the Greater Portland Municipal Federal Credit Union in City Hall where she was a friendly and beloved face to all its members. Upon her retirement, she was honored with the Key to the City of Portland. A member of St. Pius X Church, for years she was its bingo book keeper. She and Lindy also enjoyed weekend trips to Higgins Beach, their cottage in Brownfield and visits with her brother Charles Bubba Place and his wife Roberta. They also enjoyed a memorable trip to Ireland and many mystery trips with their dear friend Bob Hasson. While Dot was a hard worker for many years, it was home and with her family that gave her the most joy. She made the holidays a joyous occasion for everyone. Whether it was her outstanding pies made from scratch or her amazing stuffing and turkey. The pre-Thanksgiving pie night was a family tradition with Dot supervising in the fine art of making pie crust from scratch. Christmas Eve was a highlight of the year sharing her home with her family and friends. After raising her four children Mary, Mick, Billy and Patty she took great pleasure in welcoming her grandchildren to the family. Daniel, Christopher, Grace, Michael and Joe held a very special place in Dorothys heart as did Emma, her great-granddaughter. She was the very best Grammy and Mammy they could wish for. Dot is survived by her children and their spouses; Mary and Peter Vankevich, Mick and Kathryn Skerritt, Billy and Patty Skerritt, Patty and Dale Larsen, Grandchildren Daniel Skerritt and his wife Lisa and their baby Emma, Christopher Skerritt, Michael Vankevich, Grace Skerritt and Joe Skerritt. She is preceded in death by her brothers Charles and Richard Place. Thanks and appreciation to the staff at Cedars Nursing Home and the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough for their care these last several weeks. Prayers will be recited at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 10:15am followed by an 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave, Portland. My mother Dorothy McFarland Bickford grew up next door to your mother Dorothy on May Street in Portland. She asked me to write to you and express her sympathy and to let you know she always thought your mom was so pretty and lovely. My mother’s maiden name is McFarland and she is 88 years old too. Our family would like to let you know we are thinking of you and sending prayers your way.Sincerely, Lynn Bickford
