Dorothy M. Porter

SOUTH PORTLAND - Dorothy M. Porter, 96, South Portland, widow of Paul S. Porter, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on November 23, 2012. Dorothy was born in Cape Porpoise on August 22, 1916, daughter of Lyman and Goldie (Perry) Huff. She graduated from Kennebunkport High School in 1935, where she was captain of the girl's basketball team. Dorothy married Paul Porter on November 29, 1936 in Kennebunkport. The couple lived in Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport, and later moved to Redbank in South Portland, raising their two daughters. In 1953, they moved to Thirlmere Avenue in South Portland and welcomed a son and another daughter to the family. Dorothy lived on Thirlmere Avenue until a month before her death, when she moved in with her daughter, Connie, in Scarborough. Dorothy was a communicant of South Portland's Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was active in its bowling league. She worked at the Langsford House in Kennebunkport, the Merry Manor Inn and the York Steak House in South Portland. Her hobbies included knitting, cooking, reading and, in her later years, word search puzzles and watching (funding!) QVC. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, who died in 1992; her parents; a sister; three brothers; and a son Richard. She is survived by three daughters, Connie (Porter) Scott of Scarborough, Norma (Porter) Smith and her husband David of Longview WA, and Leanne (Porter) Perron and her husband Rick of Scarborough; eight grandchildren, Teresa Scott, Robyn LeClair, Brenda Mariner, Sandra Summerson, Gregg Maines, Michael Smith, and Joshua and Gabrielle Perron; eleven great-grandchildren, Nickolas LeBrecque, Ryan and Erin Cyr, Audrey and Peter Mariner, and Meghan and Mitchell Summerson; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to Anne and Misty, caregivers with Hospice of Southern Maine, for their exceptional care and kindness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Main St., South Portland. Burial will be at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.
