Doris A. Chadbourne
Doris A. Chadbourne, 88, a longtime resident of Ellsworth Street in Springvale, died September 22 at Cadigan Lodge at the Highlands in Topsham after a lengthy illness.She was born in Lewiston on September 8, 1923, the daughter of Ovide and Yvonne (Binette) Rousseau. Later in life, she was adopted by Walter and Alice Blake.Doris attended Lewiston schools and later moved with the Blakes to Sanford graduating in 1943 from Sanford High School. She was a 1945 graduate of Westbrook Junior College. Although active in many activities in high school and college, the highlight may have been as a football cheerleader.On June 14, 1947, she married Merle J. Chadbourne and they remained best friends and travelling companions until his death in 1999. They spent many summers at Wells Beach and winters in Florida at North Redington Beach. Doris was also predeceased by a sister, Marcella George, and by two brothers, Fernand Rousseau and Amedee Rousseau.Doris was first employed as a medical assistant to local physician, Dr. Owen B. Head, then as a lab technician at H. D. Goodall Hospital, and subsequently as a secretary at Sanford Junior High School followed by helping many children as an elementary reading aide before retiring in 1985. In her retirement, she volunteered many hours in the emergency room at H.D. Goodall Hospital.She was a longtime active member of the Sanford First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was involved with many church functions. While a resident of Topsham, she attended the United Baptist Church of Topsham.Doris was very energetic. She enjoyed exercising, downhill skiing, and was a member of the Sanford Country Club. She also enjoyed baking desserts and bread and sharing them with friends, neighbors, and often the children at church.Family members recall that she was a generous woman with a positive outlook who invariably left those whom she met with a lasting impression. She was especially well thought of by those with whom she resided and by those who compassionately cared for her at Cadigan Lodge, where she had lived for the last three years. Survivors include her son, David Chadbourne and his wife Karen of Danville, CA, a daughter, Jane Faulkner and her husband John of South Harpswell, five grandchildren, Nathaniel Chadbourne, Sarah Chadbourne, Sadie Shaw, her husband Ryan and their daughters Hannah and Rebecca, Michael Faulkner, and Matthew Faulkner.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Sanford First Baptist Church with the Rev. Virginia E. Gass officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow in the church vestry. Burial will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Sanford First Baptist Church, P. O.
