South Portland-Daniel Joseph McGonagle III, 89, of Thompson Street passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 with his loving family by his side.
Born on October 26, 1933, in Portland, Maine, Daniel was the son of the Late Daniel J. Jr. and Dorothy (Fowler) McGonagle. He attended Portland schools and enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a Paratrooper and earning the National Defense Service Medal.
Dan lived in South Portland for most all his adult life, where he raised a beautiful family with his late wife, Peggy (Margaret Rafuse) McGonagle. He was a dedicated letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 32 years, retiring at the age of 55. During his career, he served as State President of the Maine Letter Carriers Association and was a proud member of the Irish American Club. Dan's love for adventure was evident in his hobbies, which included hunting throughout Maine. driving cross-country to deep-sea fish in Alaska with his friend George, fishing in the lakes and rivers of Maine, and spending summers at the family camp on Highland Lake. He was an avid reader, particularly fascinated by history and the stories of his Irish heritage. He also enjoyed cheering on the Boston Celtics and the New York Giants. Daniel's love for life and family brought joy to everyone who knew him. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "It is not the length of life, but the depth." Daniel's life was full of depth, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Dan is predeceased by two brothers, Frederick and John McGonagle. He is survived by three daughters, Kathleen and her husband Brian Carmichael of Hermon, Carol McGonagle of South Portland and Karen and her husband Ronnie White of Raymond; a brother William and his wife Janet McGonagle of South Portland; a sister in law, Penny McGonagle of Yarmouth; six grandchildren, Joe and his wife Diana Carmichael of CA, Kelsey Carmichael of CA, Jen and her husband Steve Alward of South Portland, Dan and his wife Hannah Richards of Cumberland, Ryan and his wife Rachel White of CA, Shawn and his wife Nicole White of Westbrook; twelve great grandchildren Emma, Ellie, John, Evie, Luke, Dylan, Mia, Lucy, Rylee, Ryder, Vivian and Adela; granddog, Baylee as well as many nieces and nephews.
