Chester Smith

Chester Smith, 74, formerly of Old Orchard Beach died early Saturday morning September 29, 2001 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.Mr. Smith was born of April 11, 1927 in Somerville, MA. He was the son of Jairus and Evelyn Goss Smith. He attended Somerville schools and enlisted in the Army in September of 1944.Mr. Smith proudly served his country in the 301st military intelligence company during WWII where he worked in military intelligence and interrogation. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Ribbon. In 1947 Mr. Smith returned to civilian life.Following his military career Mr. Smith worked as an independent carpenter. Surviving are five daughters, Charlotte, Charlene, Denise, Michele, and Lori; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Also surviving is a brother Robert Smith and his wife Joyce.A graveside service for Mr. Smith will be held on Thursday October 4, 2001 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, ME at 1:00 PM.
