Charles "Charlie" Pierce, 88, longtime resident of Shapleigh, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.He was born June 7, 1916 at home in Waterboro a son of Charles N. and Zetto M. (Scott) Pierce and attended local schools. During World War II, Charlie was in the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked at the Portland Shipyard. He owned and operated Piece's Tydol Station from 1964 - 1972. It was a full service station, which included gas, auto repair, and welding, located at Butlers Corner, now known at Black Bear Auto.He then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972, Shop 11, as a Ship Fitter, retiring in 1982. Mr. Pierce was a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge for over 40 years and was Past Exalted Ruler. He also belonged to the Springvale Fish and Game, Springvale Social Club, LaFayette Social Club and the Wolves Social Club.He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his cottage on Square Pond, ice fishing and boating. Mr. Pierce was known for his independent nature and was one to share his opinion freely with his friends and neighbors. He was devoted to his wife and children and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Doris (Driscoll) Pierce of Shapleigh; two sons, Arnold "Arnie" Pierce and his wife, Sue and Barry Pierce and his wife, Karen both of Shapleigh; one daughter, Joanne Tavner and her husband, Ron of Paris, VA. 9 Grandchildren, 12 great -grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. Also, numerous brothers and sisters. Family and friends may call Thursday, January 13, 2005 from 2- 4 pm and 7- 9 pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Funeral Services will be Friday, January 14, 2005 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in So. Waterboro in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to benefit the Kids' Conservation Camp to the Springvale Fish and Game c/o Dick Bond, 16 Greenaway, Springvale, ME 04083.
