Born in: Exeter, PA
Resided in: Scarborough, ME

Charlene R. (Berretta) Daly, 82, of Scarborough passed away on June 7, 2026, at home with her loving family at her side. She is the wife of James J. Daly, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage.

Charlene was born July 13, 1943, in Exeter, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Binker) Berretta. She was a graduate of Exeter High School and Pittston Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her RN. She also pursued a design degree in Chicago.

Charlene and Jim have resided in Maine for the past 24 years. Previously they resided in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and Toronto, before settling in Holden, Massachusetts where they raised their family for 24 years.

Charlene will always be remembered as a fearless and loving person. She laughed freely, loved many, and jumped into all of life’s moments with both feet.

Charlene had a creative spirit and was a self-taught artist. She was a home-maker in the truest sense of the word. Having moved many times over the years as she raised a young family, she was talented in creating spaces that were uniquely beautiful and warm. She loved welcoming others into the home, laughing with family and friends over a great meal. She created and collected art, and refurbished antiques for her home and for loved ones. Charlene also loved to share creative experiences with others: building gingerbread villages with her children every holiday season, painting holiday murals on their windows, making new salt-dough ornaments to add to the Christmas Tree every year, and designing intricate Halloween costumes.

Charlene was deeply compassionate and so gave to others with an open heart. She was a eucharistic minister, bringing communion and joy to veterans at the Maine Veterans Home. She volunteered with the St. Vincent dePaul soup kitchen, where she could often be found having pulled up a chair to sit with a young mother and her children. Over the years, Charlene and Jim also helped many immigrants and immigrant families establish their new lives in America. Charlene welcomed them as a part of her own family as they celebrated holidays and other special parts of their lives, and they worked together as she taught them how to drive and adapt to many differences in their new life. A true caregiver at heart, and undeterred by experiencing the suffering of others, Charlene brought aid and comfort to many individuals who were living with chronic or terminal illness over the years.

Never content to be idle, and with seemingly endless energy, Charlene never seemed to stop. Whether it was Campfire Girls, driving her children and their friends to activities, co-creating a small cleaning or wreath-making business with friends, becoming a teacher’s aide; Charlene was happiest when she filled her plate.

In addition to her loving husband Jim, Charlene is survived by her three children, Lisa Daly and her husband Angus Morrison of Natick, Deidre Daly and her longtime partner Connor Wheary of Asheville, NC, and James Daly and his wife Catherine of Chelmsford. She is the loving grandmother to Lily Morrison, Colin Morrison and Natalie Daly. She is also survived by her sister Sandra Brown of Montrose, PA as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Charlene is predeceased by her brother Karl Berretta, of Harding PA.
