Caroline Hanscom Merrifield died on Tuesday, May 31 at the age of 89.Caroline was born on May 26, 1916 in Sanford, the daughter of Dr. Alpheus and Etta Pierce Hanscom. She graduated from Sanford high School in 1934, received a bachelor's degree from Bates College in 1938 and a master's degree from the University of Southern Maine in 1971. For many years Caroline worked as a high school English and Latin teacher first in Harvard Massachusetts and later for 23 years, at Sanford High School where she also served as an advisor for a number of student activities.Caroline also enjoyed teaching in the Sanford Adult Evening School. In addition to her teaching Caroline was active in a variety of community organizations including the Sanford First Baptist Church, the Goodall Hospital Auxiliary, the College Club, the Maine Retired Teachers Association and the Bates College Alumni Association.Her husband Emil Merrifield, her son Douglas Merrifield and her brothers Fred Hanscom and Dr. Oscar Hanscom, predeceased Caroline. Surviving by her two daughters and their husbands, Constance and Thomas Perry of Orono and C. Ann Merrifield and Wayne Davis of Boston, by her daughter-in-law Aleida Merrifield of Springvale and by her brother and sister-in-law Ward and Nancy Hanscom of Sanford. She is also survived by six grandchildren Matthew Perry of New York City, Katherine Perry of West Haven, CT, Benjamin, Libbey and Nathaniel Davis of Boston and Catherine Rockroth of Centreville, VA. In addition she is survived by two step grandsons Edward Carnes of Sanford and John Carnes of Acton as well as a number of nieces and nephews.A 2:00 PM memorial service for Caroline will be held on Sunday June 26, 2005 at the Sanford First Baptist Church with Reverend Virginia Gass officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church.In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St. Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.
