March 22, 1935 ~ September 28, 2011
GORHAM - Carol Ann LaMontagne, 76, of Gorham died peacefully September 28, 2011 at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born March 22, 1935 in Everett, MA a daughter of Raymond Fred and Elizabeth Lydia Johnson McLaughlin. A 1953 graduate of Danvers High School, Carol went on to Katherine Gibb Secretarial School in Boston, MA and upon her graduation in 1955 began working for Estabrook Co., an investment firm in Boston, MA. On September 7, 1958 she married Frederick J. LaMontagne, Sr. in Danvers, MA and began raising their family. Carol and family moved to Gorham in 1978 and she worked as an administrator at University of Southern Maine (USM) from 1979-2004. A devout Catholic, Carol was very involved in the life of St. Anne's Church in Gorham. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a lector, and a member of the parish council. She served on many committees but closest to her heart was her involvement in the bereavement committee and religious education. Carol was a passionate reader. She especially enjoyed her time with her friends in the church book club. She was an avid knitter and loved to pass the afternoon with her close friends at the Korner Knitters. Most important to Carol was spending time with her 10 grandchildren, family and extended family. Sunday Dinners were the norm throughout the fall and winter. Spring was spent gardening, summer was for family cookouts, trips to the lake for boating and fishing or to the beach where she loved to read by the ocean and watch her children and grandchildren play in the surf. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Fred in 2005; her brother, Robert McLaughlin in 1990; and, her sister Murial Pifalo in 1998. She is survived by her three children and ten grand children: daughter, Anne Marie Louie and her husband Jonathan, and their children Elizabeth Claire and Elliot Jack of San Carlos, CA; Peter B. LaMontagne and his wife Lynn of Long Island, ME and their five children, Benjamin, Christian, Julian, Agnes Mae and Carol Anne; and, Frederick J. LaMontagne, Jr., his wife Theresa, and their children Frederick III, Elizabeth and Lucas of Gorham, ME. Also surviving her are two sisters, Eleanor DeCarney, Betty Braese and her husband Larry, both of Reading, MA; and a brother, Donald McLaughlin and his wife Andrea of Charlotte, NC and Lorraine McLaughlin. The family would like to thank her sisters, Nancy Hawkes, Melanie Barrett, Sr. Jackie Moreau, all the medical professionals that provided care to her, the "knitting ladies", St. Anne's Parish Community and the Book Club, for the friendship, love and kindness expressed to Carol and the family throughout her illness. Visiting hours will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by an 11:00 a.m. concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anne's Church, 299 Main Street, Gorham.
