Carla was born and raised in Milano, Italy. She earned a PhD in Mathematics from the University in Milano. Her first job was in Germany, working for Siemens to explore ways to use computers to solve differential equations. She came to America in 1968, eventually found her way to biostatistics, and created the first national registry for pediatric trauma. Her work was used by medical researchers and policy makers to make the world safer for childen. On three different occasions she presented papers at UN World Health Organization conferences (Amsterdam, Vienna, and Delhi). That's the official version of Carla. The real Carla was so much more. She loved music, films, and books. Her husband remembers their early years together in Cambridge. They would leave work, go back to their apartment with their dear friend Ruth in tow, and roll a couple of joints. Then they would stroll down to Harvard Square and catch the latest Fassbinder film. As a loyal daughter of Italy, Carla worked hard to convince her American friends that going to the opera was a fun thing to do. She also developed a deep love for American music. Her husband has fond memories of traveling with her, from Cambridge to Rhode Island, in the back of a pickup truck to attend a Grateful Dead concert. And the books -- always the books. Carla read two or three books a week and loved nothing more than talking to her friends about what she was reading, what they were reading, and why they absolutely had to read Rachel Cusk. Carla is survived by her husband Al Cramer and her dog Nina; her sister Marisa and her brother Enrico; and her brother and sister-in-law Renato and Graciella. Also many people on Peaks Island and Boston/Cambridge. She loved being in this world, and to share that experience with her was a great blessing.
