Whitneyville- Carl Donworth “Jake” Vane, 92, died peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2023, following a brief illness, with his loving family by his side. Jake was born in Machias, Maine on April 23, 1931, the son of the late Harold and Nellie (Johnson) Vane. He graduated from Machias Memorial High School’s class of 1949 and following graduation enlisted in the United States Air Force. On September 4, 1951, Jake married his high school sweetheart Frances Harmon, and together they have shared 72 years of marriage and a lifetime of adventures. After returning home from his time in the Air Force, Jake went on to continue his life of service working as a firefighter at the Cutler Navy Base where he had a 32-year career, retiring in 1986. Following his retirement and unable to remain idle, he went to work part time for Mallar’s Plumbing & Heating, Jake was a jack of all trades! Not only was he an avid woodworker and craftsman but he could build or fix anything. He owned, and would quickly loan, any tool you could imagine and was always willing to help. It wasn’t just his generous heart that you noticed, his smile and charm were magnetic. Jake was a true family man and there was no prouder father or grandfather, and he had every hat or sweatshirt to prove it! He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Jake was predeceased by two brothers, Leslie and Herbert Vane; a sister, Helen Vane. He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Vane of Whitneyville; a son, Paul and his wife Betty Jo Vane also of Whitneyville; a daughter, Ann Hayward of South Portland; a sister, Marie Hill of Norway; two granddaughters, Melissa and her husband Rexford Manankil of Baltimore; Whitney Hayward and her husband Richard Tuttle of New Gloucester; three great grandchildren, Mason and Peyton Manankil of Baltimore and Emilia Tuttle of New Gloucester; a niece Martha Ranke of Machias.
